Had to cut my grass Saturday. It is still growing. Usually I am shoveling snow in northern Illinois in December. My wife pointed out some pink and white flowers outside the grocery store yesterday that were blooming out of season.
Something doesn't seem right.
How are things where you are?

Even with climate change, this is pretty standard weather for us
sadbear
(4,340 posts)But I guess those were just fortunate fronts. Yeah, it kinda sucks that we have to hope for cold fronts to blow in in order to get some cool weather in December. On the bright side, my entire autumn garden is still alive and thriving. I've got habaneros growing out the wazoo.

(29,414 posts)But it is nice that we have a longer growing season here.
As we/they say about Texas, we have two seasons: Summer, and Not Summer

(3,069 posts)The news said is 20 degrees above normal. It isn't exactly unusual to be warm going in to Christmas, but usually it is high 60s-70s, not 80s. I hate that I need to run the ac in December.

(3,069 posts)That is what I said last year. Used to be you could get by with no air from December to March, roughly. Not so much the last couple of years, and I doubt next year will be any different. I hate it. Hate it hate it hate it.

82 degrees on December 1st is weird even for Texas.

But it was a bit jarring yesterday that when I went to the grocery store I saw Christmas trees for sale, and a butterfly enjoying the weather, and speedwell blooming, which usually doesn't happen until January.

I'll keep the weather we presently have, as it is so nice not to have to wear a coat, but I'd certainly appreciate your cooperation on Dec. 24th. I've been trying to hire a team of horses/sleigh to take the grandkids/greats on a sleigh ride for the last 4 years, but all we've had is rain or temps so high no one needed a winter coat. (16,254 posts)I got up because I couldn't sleep and checked the weather for today. It was 57 degrees at 3:30 am with a little light drizzle...light enough you could only see it on the cement. With the exception of 3 or so days, our temps have been in the 50-70s for highs. I think today is when it's supposed to hit 70 AGAIN.
I looked out a week ago to see 5 new clematis blooms. The vines had gone dormant, but are half green again and there are 5 blooms. That night, it got down to the 20s, so I figured that would be the end of that. It is still blooming, although they earlier ones have dropped the petals and they are forming seed pods.
Most of my flowerbeds are perennials and some of them are coming up. It appears this week will stay in the 40-50s until the weekend, which will slide down to the 30-40s. We haven't had snow on Christmas Eve for 4 years.

(86,709 posts)It's been raining for the past two weeks with small spurts of snow. We now have about 6-8 inches of half frozen slush on the ground that should, in a normal year, be at least 2-3ft of snow. The sun came out today, haven't sen much of that, right about freezing but that means anything in the direct sunlight is melting. All the rain of the past couple days was predicted to be lots of snow, just didn't happen that way. Winter sports/tourism is taking a major hit. My pansies next to the porch are still green and looking like they might bloom again. Kind of spooky, hasn't been very cold even though it gets into the 20s at night. Any real significant snow on the ground is way up around 8000ft. so there's snow on the mountains but not below 8000ft. really. It was in the 90s a lot this summer and really dry, had lots of forest/range fires.

(10,745 posts)It has indeed been quite a bit warmer than normal. It's 74 degrees right now......the average is somewhere around 60 for this area, I think, this early in December, and we hit 83 just yesterday. It's not that unusual for this part of the country, TBH.
OTOH, I still remember Feb. 2011.....brrr, was the first week chilly. And this is late winter, mind you, we rarely get snow or below freezing highs in mid-January, let alone February. So the crazy weather's really been going both ways, I think.

Also, we had a thick, thick fog that lasted the whole day. I can't remember a fog like that here.
Weird!!
I know this thread is all anecdote and includes a (very) few exceptions to the....er...trend atm.
I also know that the saying in this area my whole life is 'If you don't like the weather, wait a few minutes'. It can be very volatile and seemingly-unseasonable. But damned if it doesn't seem pretty *consistently* unseasonable lately. My veggie garden has been harder to plan and manage. And I am in one of the parts of the country without major weather/climate problems. We have hit low-level drought on and off this year but compared to a lot of places we have it pretty good (at least it is wet out there now). We have had some crop issues too the last few years (esp fruit), due to weather, but we are a pretty diverse state that way so we've been okay on the sorta macro level.
I dunno, it's been an unpredictable few years. I hadn't planned such a long rant, LOL, but this thread is somehow very telling.
