Welcome to DU to all our new members and lurkers. Thanks Bob Costas!

Last edited Mon Dec 3, 2012, 12:41 AM - Edit history (1)

I posted a thread about Bob Costas and his anti-gun message on Sunday Night Football. It is the #1 google search result on the topic. The thread has gotten us 5900 views in 55 minutes and at least 10 new members.

To the new members, Welcome to DU! DU is a left/liberal/progressive website. We mostly support Obama. DUers are on all sides of the gun issue, but we're not going to let you run through here like an NRA fan site.

Look around. There's lots of interesting people, topics, and forums. People here will argue with you, but don't take it personally. We like to argue. Have fun!

Have you ever actually been around chickens or cows? I have, as my dad's family were farmers for generations. They're mobile meat. That's all. They're not "beings", or sentient. Surely you saw the stories about the chicken that got its head just about all the way chopped off and lived for a year and a half. They're just meat. I've been on a tour of a chicken processing plant and gone to have a chicken sandwich right after. Doesn't disturb me a bit. Saves me the trouble of doing the killing and cleaning myself.

Cows aren't sentient? Just a stupid, stupid comment, whether or not you think it's OK to eat them.

Cows aren't sentient. They don't have any kind of higher consciousness. What is the matter with you? Ever had a conversation with a cow? Ever seen cow artwork? Or cow music? Or do you think that Chick-fil-A commercials with cows having cute personalities and painting signs are literal? Holy crap. Cows are meat on the hoof. Calling them sentient is what's really a "stupid, stupid comment."

Guess someone as "sentient" as yourself thinks that's just fine.

16. The chicken's not the only one who appears to be missing a head. Do some reading by ethologists.

Animals experience pleasure and pain. That is the definition of sentience. If you have not personally observed with all your time around farm animals I am shocked at the strength of your psychological filters. Moreover, a chicken being able to survive with its head cut off is a matter of biology, not sentience. You're entitled to your views but facts are facts.

18. You know, you're right about sentience

I'm mixing up sentience with sapience. If it's not sapient, it's food, as far as I'm concerned. And I couldn't give a rat's ass what anyone from this board or PETA thinks about that.

2. Yeah, arguing immediately with the anti-PETA statement. I'm a proud supporter of PETA.

Guns? They're fun. But animal cruelty pushes my violent button.

Perhaps a poll before making such statements. I've seen one or two threads attacking PETA, and a herd of responses blowing raspberries at the poster.

Other than that, I welcome new members too.

I've seen the polls and arguments over and over and over again.

I did say "relatively." I figured that it was a better word choice than "surprisingly."

It is? Not in my world or comprehension. There are many divided on these issues but I wouldn't hand it over to one side or the other.

Especially compared to the Democratic party as a whole. We are also slightly less supportive of Obama.

I guess I thought 50/50. I am one of the people who has never owned nor shot a gun in my life and I am 56. I would like the laws to make it harder for people to own one.

PETA, agree with them a lot unless they get too crazy.

I found out when I moved to the mountains how many dems have guns also, so learned to accept.

When I was in the city, didn't know anyone who had one.
