McCaskill: ‘I Feel Almost Sorry For John Boehner’

from TPM: http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/mccaskill-i-feel-almost-sorry-for-john-boehner?ref=fpb

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) said that she feels "almost sorry" for House Speaker John Boehner during an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday, explaining that Boehner is in a tough spot because of the far-right wing of the Republican Party.

"I feel almost sorry for John Boehner," McCaskill said. "There is incredible pressure on him from a base of his party that is unreasonable about this. And he's gotta decide, is his speakership more important, or is the country more important. And in some ways, he has got to deal with this base of the Republican Party, who Grover Norquist represents."

McCaskill continued to talk about Norquist: "And you know, everybody's elevated Grover -- I mean, I met him for the first time this morning, nice to meet him -- but you know, who is he? Why is he this guy that has captured so much attention in this?"

. . . that's why he survives. He's replaceable; inconsequential.

He's also a diversion; it works if he's allowed to posture like he's speaking for average Americans. He's clearly a corporate goon.

The last thing Norquist or his sponsors want is for this to be a debate about Norquist and his sponsors. They're squealing like stuck pigs.

I don't think she was expressing true sympathy. Obviously the Republicans have created their own problems.

I thought it was actually a rather artful dig.

This reminds of of Anne Richards (gawd, I miss her) when she did her "Poor George" schtick.

him.

He made his bed now let him sleep with the ticks, fleas, and bed bugs, he could have stood up to them 4 years ago, he chose not to. Fuck him.

He's vulnerable and Democrats know it. They can't pass whatever they want without Democrats in the House and Boehner will have to come down from this fake outrage and deal. McCaskill and others today have been pointing to his extreme caucus and working to divide them from their skittish leader.
