Pe'Sla had been privately owned. The owners allowed the Sioux tribes to practice rituals on the land. When it went up for sale the tribes were worried it would be developed. The land owners cancelled a public auction that was to be held to give the tribes a chance to raise the money to buy it. Through online donations, donations from three Sioux tribes, and donations from celebrities and others they were able to raise the $9 million to buy the land. Some Sioux tribes did not contribute toward the purchase because they felt they shouldn't have to purchase something that is already theirs, but were glad the other tribes were able to gain ownership of the land.
