Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsSometimes Chris Matthews is an idiot and you have to wonder what alternate universe he inhabits.
Like, for instance, this evening when he was trying to make great history out of the President having lunch with Romney. Chris was aghast that Romney had to open his own car door and that there was no Secret Service with him. Chris, the man LOST his bid and he was invited to the WH as a private citizen. He is not the leader of another nation nor is he even more that nominal head of his own party, which is now a regional party. Get a grip and stop romanticizing events. There was nothing grand about Romney when he conceded. He did so that night after having the hubris to show up fully believing that the office was his no matter what. He said the only thing he could at the time. He lost and was not prepared for it. Do you really think that Romney would have been so gracious had he been the winner? There is nothing more to this event than that we, as a nation, have an elected an extremely decent person to the office who knows how to show grace in the face of adversity.
PS. Please, spend a little less time with Fineman. You don't do anything for each other when bloviating together.

(115,735 posts)Some would say he blows, period, but that's not strictly true. Sometimes he's quite good - but at other times he says the most bizarre, goofy, ridiculous things that you wonder if he ignored the warnings about the brown acid. In this case, for example, of course it was no BFD that Obama invited Romney to lunch; this seems to be a sort of tradition, which requires both participants to be polite and gracious and act like they don't hate each other's guts. But Tweety likes drama, and this event didn't give him any. So he had to try to invent some.

(39,374 posts)Tweety loves the old society guard in Washington whom Obama ignores. He jumped on Obama for not thanking Bill Clinton in his victory speech, then it turned out the first person he called after Romney conceded was Clinton. Now this imagined breach of protocol.
Worst of all, the President is on record as religiously avoiding cable news and comment. Tweety connects with Obama politically, but he has his doubts about the person. He realizes he's a bit player in the President's eyes and it gnaws at him, so he hits ten times as hard as he should whenever he sees something he perceives as an opportunity, which has the additional benefit of pleasing his corporate masters.

(75,480 posts)come up for an air of reality in decades. Back in the eighties I liked Matthews. He wrote a newspaper column and it was full of democratic and intelligent ideas as well as insider information. Somewhere during the Clinton administration he drank the coo coo Kool-Aid and has been erratic and even crazy since then. Since then there are occasional glimpses of the old Chris peeking through but not often enough IMHO.

(17,609 posts)Matthews acted like it was hurting his heart that the President couldn't find something for romney to do. Everytime a Dem gets into office the media wants them to be so magnanmus as though they are begging the CONS to like them. CONS get in office and don't give a damn! They do their damndest to kill us.
Another thing that was getting on my nerves with Tweety is how he treats CONS when they come on his show With Corker was and Collins yesterday he kept agreeing with them about Rice and saying yes, yes, when he needs to stfu and let them dig their own hole.

(23,664 posts)I watched most of that debate and I thought Obama did OK, just OK. But then I watched the MSNBC commentary and there was Matthews screaming "IT'S ALL OVER!!! OBAMA BLEW IT BIG TIME!!! HE'S GONNA LOOOOOOSE!! ROMNEY'S GONNA WIN!!!! WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH HIM??? THIS IS TERRIBLE, HE HAD IT IN THE BAG AND HE GAVE IT AWAY!!!!!"
Pretty soon his panic infected Rachel Maddow, normally the most unflappable of pundits and the meme soon spread to the other networks. By the next day the entire pundit world was abuzz with talk of Mittmentum and Obama's very bad terrible horrible debate performance. And since they all really wanted a close race, they kept talking up this theme for the next two weeks even in the face of Obama kicking Romney's ass in the last two debates.
And I really believe if Matthew's hysterical hissy fit hadn't happened none of this bullshit would have ever taken place. Obama would have coasted to victory on Nov 6 and there would have been no doubt about the outcome.
I don't think Matthews is smart enough to have planned this chain of events. IMO he lost it and started screeching like a banshee for some reason known only to him.
His gushing praise of Romney's stinky concession speech was another example. He's nothing more than a star struck gossip columnist and probably belongs on TMZ instead of a serious political commentary show.
