Bill O'Reilly and Keith Ablow don't get "Gangnam Style."

I was my head off reading this, and immediately though, "Hey Bill, did you dance the Macarena?"

Bill O'Reilly brought on pseudo-psychiatrist Keith Ablow last night to explain the whole 'Gangnam Style' phenomenon to him. Or at least that was the purported reason. The result was the usual idiocy, mixed with a fair bit of xenophobia. In other words, regular fare for the old white farts who watch O'Reilly who are just as befuddled by modernity as O'Reilly seems to be. Why would Americans be listening to a song “without intelligible words", where they have no idea what the meaning is, sung mostly in a foreign language by a fat little Korean bouncing around like he was riding a horse?

O'Reilly asked "What's going on?"

Ablow responded, as only Fox News contributors can: "I think what this fellow is tapping into... is the fact that people don't want any meaning right now. It is just is sort of like a drug and that seems to be what most people seem to want right now. Not reality, not feeling, not meaning."

O'Reilly: "So it means nothing but it's got a nice upbeat to it but you can do the pony and ride around."

Ablow: "The meaning is that it means nothing."

So there you have it. A song has no meaning because a couple of middle-aged white guys says it doesn't.

There are TONS of songs out there, from every era, with unintelligible lyrics. Even worse, there are tons of songs with..........(gasp!)...........no words whatsoever!!!

Every time someone brings on this Keith Ablow joker, all I can think of is, "This is the 'psychologist' who claimed that having Chaz Bono on 'Dancing With The Stars' would turn children gay." Yeah, a real man of science, that one.

I better not catch Bill O'Reilly listening to "Feliz Navidad" this month. It has unintelligible lyrics and is sung by a guy who is probably an illegal immigrant (they all are, you know) who is also BLIND (which means he's probably suckling off the government teat too)!!!

But the guy writing the song was drinking a great deal of wine while doing so, and it came out the weird way.

"Louie Louie" by the Kingsmen was the same way, their frontman was plowed when they recorded it.

That's why Billo & Co. don't get it, even though the translation and explanations are all over that newfangled web.

PSY (real name Park Jae-Sang) grew up in Gangnam, and his song/video is poking fun at the lifestyle and the type of people there.

It's amazing how a guy who grew up in such an affluent area turned out to be so humble and down-to-earth.

A quick, related news item: PSY was in the hospital recently for exhaustion resulting from his whirlwind, worldwide tour to promote GS. He's at home with his family to recuperate, but he's supposed to hit the road again on November 30.

Methinks Billo is jealous that he'll never be as rich or as cool as Park Jae-Sang.

Please don't pin me down on this but IIRC it was invented by a jazz-singer in the 1920's when he lost his notes mid-song and began to make up nonsense-words as a "filler".

All I hear is "I'm a condom star." when the kids play it. I don't hate it, I just think it's dumb. It's a one hit wonder and no one will remember it six months from now. Last year it was LMFAO, this year it's this dude, next year it will be someone else. Get what you can while it lasts I guess.

it's popular. It's also unique (for open-minded people) that it comes from South Korea. I'm encouraged and glad that our popular culture now includes Gangnam Style.

I haven't been to a dance club in years but I don't need to go to one to know that this song is being played in every venue with a dance floor and alcohol and the dance (I'm sure) has caught on like the Macarena and Electric Slide, etc. This may account for it's immense popularity here in the U.S.

Almost, because I still dance like I've got a broomstick up my butt, but it's been that way for the last forty years, so that's nothing new.

(It took me almost a week to get The Three Amigos salute right, and I gave up on the Macarena because I could never remember what part of the body I was supposed to grab next.)

I wouldn't know what the fuck I'm talking about, yet wouldn't I pretend to think that just because I don't know that there's no way to understand any of that stuff at all.

Billo and his quack headshrinker should be ashamed of themselves. But the fact that they have NO SHAME at all speaks volumes.
