Is there ANYTHING redeeming about Keystone Energy? Any reason to support the company, in any way?

I ask this, because I'm trying to understand the folks who think I shouldn't make too much about the Keystone stock Susan Rice reportedly owns.

The defense of her goes something like, 'Owning the stock doesn't mean support for the pipeline.' One poster said they think they own stock in Keystone, yet, still oppose the pipeline. That sounds likely, but I'm still wondering just what kind of thinking goes into owning a share of a company. I'd think there would be at least SOME expectation and hope that the company would succeed and prosper. After all, the purpose of owning stocks is usually to reap dividends from the company profits.

In the case of Keystone, I can't imagine ANY scenario where I'd be rooting for this company to succeed; not in the face of their mindless and destructive determination to develop their pipeline on sensitive and environmentally vulnerable routes. There's a further concern of mine about the tar sands oil they're intent on transporting through the pipeline.

Keystone hasn't been responsive about that route because they realized they were wrong. They are being made uncomfortable by political action and grassroots activism. That's the ONLY reason they're even considering relocating their pipeline. That's not the type of industry I would personally support with my dollars; nor is it an industry I think has earned enough trust to give them some sort of political pass or assistance in their ambitions.

So, I've got to wonder, first, how Rice chose Keystone to invest in, and why she believes there's something redeemable or acceptable about Keystone to merit her trust and investment.

More to the point, I'm wondering how I can reconcile my own strong opposition to Keystone and their pipeline efforts - to ANYTHING Keystone - with support for Ambassador Rice as a nominee for SOS. I simply can't support her and maintain any integrity about my desire for Keystone to suffer enough of a political blow to push their destructive ambitions back and denying them any of their careless plans for their tar sands pipeline. I just can't.

It's a pity, I think, because I like so much about Rice, and want to support the President in his choice. I hope he doesn't ultimately choose her. I can't be strongly against the Keystone pipeline and be actively promoting someone who has a financial interest in their success. It's just not credible. It's just so damn frustrating.

I'll say this . . . I'm probably going to always be a stranger to the world of stock ownership. I don't think that disconnect is some fault. In fact, I wonder about the divide in expectations and ambitions between investors and the rest of us. Tell me where I'm wrong. I'm listening.
