Yes, he's a white man, but hear me out.
He is s seasoned politician who has fought unhesitatingly for Democratic causes here at home and helping like-minded parties get organized abroad once "his work was done here." He has been involved in raising awareness for humanitarian causes in Africa and Asia. He is not afraid to get his hands dirty, and is also very much known for talking straight and getting things done where they looked impossible. His liberal politics would make him credible to the Palestinians and his wife is Jewish, so Israel would not feel an enemy in him, either.
I recommend him NOT because he is a personal friend. I'd probably see less of him than I do now if he got this job. But he'd be one HELL of an American Secretary of State. My greater fear is that if he were approached, he'd say, naaah, not interested. We have not discussed this between us at all (so far). But I'd be one proud American if he were to take the job. I can think of few better to bring the energy and enthusiasm necessary for the post, and the experience abroad necessary to do it.
His name is Howard Dean. He was cut out of Obama's first administration mostly because Rahm Emmanuel was still pissed at him for being right about the 50 State Strategy in 2006--hardly a legitimate reason to exclude one of our most able people from serving the country in a greater capacity than as a guest on the talk shows, not that he has limited himself to that by any stretch of the imagination.

My own nomination is Hispanic, Bill Richardson. He spent much of his childhood in Mexico City. He has been used by several presidents as a negotiator of last resort and he has been successful at it. Stupid even called him in to negotiate with N. Korea when things were at their worst thanks to Republican bungling.
He has the credibility around the planet and he certainly has the experience. I have no idea why his name hasn't been mentioned more frequently.
He removed himself from consideration for a Cabinet post in 2008 because of a trumped up Republican scandal that turned out to be utterly fake here in NM. The timeline didn't work with their charges, not that the local right wing papers and right wing idiots would ever admit it. That nonscandal is dead and buried.
So I now nominate Bill Richardson, for what it's worth. (plink, plink)

(130,974 posts)Rahm sure had a grudge against Dean's 50 State Strategy. Went to Politics & Prose bookstore in DC to see him talk about his book at the time, he discussed politics and strategy, but didn't mention THE Strategy, so I asked The Question: What about 50 States? The expression on his face was PRICELESS!!!
