A 35-Mile Laser Rainbow Illuminates New York As A Memorial To Sandy’s Victims

Last night, New Yorkers looking up into the cloudy sky saw something quite out of the ordinary. Streaming across the skyline was a crisp rainbow, pointing from Manhattan’s west side and headed southeast toward the Rockaways. Pedestrians stopping to snap photos might have been excused in thinking it was a strange natural phenomenon, or some new viral marketing campaign. But the lights--which will be seen for the next two nights over the city, were in fact a memorial for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

The project, called Global Rainbow After the Storm, by artist Yvette Mattern, is situated in the Standard Hotel, on the High Line. It points toward the devastated coast of Brooklyn. If conditions are right, the lights--which are projected from lasers--can be seen for 35 miles, so should extend far past the still-recovering areas and far out to sea. These photos were snapped by Drew Anthony Smith, our online photo editor.

A nice tribute. I'm also surprised though that I've never seen anything about this display before, it's beautiful.

This is Mark Helprin, who also has some tiresomely conservative politics, and in fact was Bob Dole's speechwriter. However, some of his prose is breathtakingly beautiful. There is a bridge of light in New York in "Winter's Tale."

EXCLUSIVE: In his directorial debut, Akiva Goldsman continues to add to an already strong cast for Winter’s Tale. Magic Mike and White Collar star Matt Bomer, True Blood‘s Lucy Griffiths and Eva Marie Saint round out a film that stars Colin Farrell, Downton Abbey‘s Jessica Brown Findlay, William Hurt, Will Smith and Russell Crowe. The film, based on the Mark Helprin novel, is about a dying young woman (Findlay) who falls in love with a thief who breaks into her palatial home on the West Side of Manhattan, in a drama that takes place in 19th century and contemporary Manhattan. Farrell plays the thief and Bomer will play his father while Griffiths plays his mother.

Thanks for the reminder. I'll have to search more actively for a new copy.

Thanks for the OP

on edit: The only problem that I see about this "feel good' story is simply that a biblical reference to rainbows and flooding is doing nothing to address the real cause and affect of climate change.

I can imagine this would blind the pilots as they land and if it's pointed at the Rockaways it's most likely in the landing/holding pattern for JFK and or Laguardia?

the hight of the flightpath must range greatly from sea level to several thousands of feet above it.
