COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) President Joe Biden will not be on Ohios ballot come November as things currently stand.
State law dictates filing deadlines for candidates, but the timing of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) this fall, where Biden will be officially nominated, takes place after Ohios deadline, which is currently 90 days before the election.
According to Secretary of State Frank LaRose, lawmakers had until Thursday to pass something that could be signed into law, also on Thursday, to make the fix. Efforts to do that failed.
We didnt have a consensus on how to get that done between the House and the Senate and all parties involved, Speaker of the Ohio House Jason Stephens (R-Kitts Hill) said.

(44,989 posts)Of course since Republican convention was past the deadline, this wasn't a problem.

(25,900 posts)This deadline has been around since 2009 or 2014. (I couldn't get a straight answer about the date of the law change)

(44,989 posts)If republican had their convention past this deadline, there would be no problem with making an exception again, would there be?

(4,554 posts)obviously taken for granted that such an issue would not arise.
Of course, the times are not normal,
and the Republican party is now a criminal organization operating in bad faith....
I presume in the future that convention dates will be moved forward....
If it is necessary to sue to get President Biden on the Ohio ballot, we will---
and since the Supreme Court has just ruled that a state cannot prevent the presidential candidate from appearing on the state ballot, I presume such a lawsuit has to be successful.

(5,507 posts)However there is some nuance here since Ohio is using a state law to prevent Biden from being on the ballot, rather than ruling from the state Supreme Court.
But since a state has never done this before, I think it would be a tough sell, even with the crazies on this court.

(17,177 posts)declare President Biden the candidate and have the convention to celebrate the decision after the fact? If if comes down to it, I'll write President Biden in, but you know if I and others don't put his name in exactly, and dot the i's, cross the t's, the ballot won't freaking count, and we'll have florida 2000 in Ohio 2024.
Somebody needs to get organized.

(6,273 posts)The first convention calls together all the delegates to vote for their Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates. This convention could be held right after the last primary. It could even be done in a teleconference format.
The second convention would be held on the August date and settle all the other issues normally dealt with in a National Convention.

(4,554 posts)be filed for the General Election on January 1st of the Presidential election year, and must also have been officially nominated by the party, or they Will Not Appear on the General Election ballot!
Impossible? NONSENSE! They'll just have to hold their nominating convention the year before
No problem, right Ohio Republicans ???
