Alan Simpson: I hope Grover Norquist drowns in the bathtub
In a surreal "Hardball" interview, the former senator makes the wildest threat yet against the anti-tax zealot
By David Daley

So this just happened on “Hardball” — former Wyoming Sen. Alan Simpson, of the Simpson-Bowles commission, essentially called for anti-tax advocate Grover Norquist to slip and fall in the tub.

Norquist has said he wants a government small enough that it can drown in the bathtub.

Said Simpson:

“So how do you deal with someone who comes to stop government? … Grover wandering the earth in his white robe saying he wants to drown government in the bathtub. I hope he slips in there with it.”

Chris Matthews, in a new record, was left speechless for several moments.

And that wasn’t even the strangest thing Simpson said in the interview. In a discussion of taxes and how the middle-class would end up on the short end, Simpson posed this question: “Who gets diddled the most?”

Clarence Thomas hearings.

Those of us who were paying attention know that Anita Hill testified truthfully, that Thomas perjured himself before Congress, and that Thomas was not held accountable. This was not a 'he said, she said' matter. Hill had complained about Thomas' harassment to friends and colleagues AT THE TIME of the alleged harassment, a fact that I will never forgive Joe Biden for allowing to get drowned out in all the background noise.

Salon: "In a surreal "Hardball" interview, the former senator makes the wildest threat yet against the anti-tax zealot."

Actually, no. there was no threat uttered by Simpson. A threat would be something like: "If he doesn't stop messing with the government, I will drown him in his bathtub." Simpson made a joke about Norquist's express desire to drown government in the bathtub. Simpson said "I hope he slips in there with it."

Simpsons mention of drowning was a reference to Grovers ideology, nothing to do with actual drowning.

Simpson just imagined a slip and fall in the tub.

Busted ass is not dieing of drowning.

He was saying that all the goppers that are backing away from THEIR (not his) pledge, are really not that many, and those that have flat-out said it, really don't mean it.

I turned off my radio and spent the next 5 miles trying to figure out ... Is this another example of conservatives denying facts, in a desperate effort to remain relevent (ala, john mccain); or, is norquist outting goppers' willingness to flat-out lie to the public?

I concluded, it's a little of both.

He is NOT dull, and he doesn't hold back.

When people talk like people do when the lights and cameras are not on them, the "media" calls it "strange"--I say it's just "unvarnished."

He didn't say Grover should DROWN--he said he should slip and, presumably, fall. So he hits his head and gets hurt? Sounds like he's advocating eye-for-an-eye justice to me. Actually, I think he was referencing Grover's IDEAS, too...but context is often absent when people want to get outraged, as I am sure Grover's pals will do.

Unfortunately no republican dares speak of reaching across the aisle while cashing their congressional paychecks, but once they leave the job they become the sacred voice of sanity.
