First Transgender Elected Official Pressured to Step Down

Stacie Marie Laughton (D) made history when she was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives earlier this month and became the first elected transgender official in the nation.

However, the Laconia Daily Sun now reports that Laughton was convicted in 2008 for "conspiracy to commit credit card fraud" and served four and a half months in jail.

While convicted felons can run for office in New Hampshire as long as they have completed their sentence, ABC News reports Republicans are calling for Laughton to step down.

I guess them thar reTHUGlikkklans never heard of Christian forgiveness, or second chances. Challenge them to their face on 'throwing the first stone.' How have they paid their debt to society?

And, since sentence was served, appears to me that they're the ones morally breaking the law.

First, I simply hope that she stands up to the bastards.

And second, two can play at the witch-hunt game.

I can't really see what the problem is, from a non-teabagger perspective.

I guess I can see the point that having someone involved in financial fraud conspiracy within the past 5-10 years would be reason to be concerned, though I imagine most of the repubs in NH have equally serious skeletons in their closets. I imagine the repubs skeletons are and have been more thoroughly hidden than Stacie's.

The time to share this information was during the campaign, not now, when it is irrelevant.
