I really have not been listening to much of this jury selection but thought interesting.
Am I the only one who thinks the 7 jurors chosen thus far sound totally in the tank for Trump? The guy from Puerto Rico thinks Trump is "fascinating and mysterious" and the guy born in Ireland who has already been designated foreperson (how?) the same. The teacher says she thinks Trump "speaks his mind" and "that's what you want." This all sounds very MAGA.

There were no names attached to the quotes.
Let's not go nutz yet.

(9,460 posts)During the selection process, the anonymous members of the jury were known only by letters and numbers, like B400 and B280. There are four men and three women, ranging from young to middle-aged. They include a salesman, a nurse, two lawyers, an IT consultant, a teacher and a software engineer. Three grew up elsewhere, in Ireland, Oregon and Puerto Rico.
They all answered questions about their background and their opinion of Trump before they were chosen to serve on the jury for one of the highest-profile trials in American history. One member, the nurse, said she "[doesn't] really have" an opinion of the former president. She promised that she is "here for my civic duty" and "to listen to the facts." The IT consultant said, "My family is my hobby," and admitted to finding Trump "fascinating and mysterious."
The teacher said she has friends with strong opinions of Trump, but added that she's not very interested in politics or the news. "President Trump speaks his mind, and I'd rather that than someone who's in office who you don't know what they're thinking," she said. She was not aware that Trump faces criminal charges in other cases.

(17,023 posts)and that traitor's complaint that people there don't like him is true, and traitor got only 45,000 votes in Manhattan, that'll even out the chances of magats getting on the jury.
Years ago, one of my teachers was talking about jury selection and the attempts, in these times with modern communication, to find impartial jurors, and if we want a jury of peers, said we might have to be satisfied with people informed about the case, but able to set aside the information they have to try to be fair.
Not going to be easy, but Justice has her foot in the door. We'll see.

(597 posts)They live in their own little bubble where they think everything should cater to what they believe - from the news coverage of Trump/Biden to even the jury selection process.

(25,480 posts)And anyone who isn't openly hostile is completely in the tank for Trump, even people who haven't professed any political stances or leanings and have agreed to keep an open mind as jurors. There is never any nuance or middle ground.

(2,220 posts)If you rule out people who know about and have a bias against Stinky, you just ruled out every informed voter. In New York paying taxes, driving and registering to vote puts you on the list for potential jury duty, so the jury is not just going to be registered voters, but if you eliminate everyone that has issues, strong issues, with trump, you have eliminated people who have a clue about Jan 6, covid deaths, and international relations. In New York, you have also eliminated anyone who knows anything about racism and is against it.
So the prosecuting attorneys may have to educate and convert people who are MAGA or would be MAGA if they bothered to get interested in politics.

(115,856 posts)but that position is just administrative; they have no more importance than the others. https://www.nycourts.gov/judges/cji/1-General/CJI2d.Foreperson.pdf In some states the jurors elect a foreperson but in New York it's just the first one chosen. That's how they already know who it is. The rest of this sounds like a bunch of stupid speculation.

(3,784 posts)Because I've conducted many a jury trial in my day, and NOT ONCE has a foreperson EVER been chosen prior to the entire panel being seated. The jurors themselves vote on who THEY want as the foreperson. Also, according to every story I've seen today, they seated only 6, not 7, jurors.
One thing I liked to hear was that they were poring over the prospective jurors' social media posts. Because you know darn well no MAGAt can go more than 30 consecutive seconds without professing their love for #DonSnoreleone. If they're looking at their social media posts, there's no way a MAGAt makes it onto this jury.

Edit: meant foreperson, not spokesperson. Correction made.
