Teacher Writes ‘You Can’t Be A Democrat And Go To Heaven’ On White Board

KENTUCKY — A teacher in Laurel County at South Laurel High School wrote the following on her white board at a public school: “You can’t be a Democrat & go to Heaven.”

We all know that religious displays by public officials — such as teachers — aren’t legal. However, this one crosses the bounds of just angering atheists into angering nearly everyone. A statement such as that is blatantly offensive. The Sentinel-Echo reports:


A student in her classroom took a photo of the white board, turning it in to the Laurel County Board of Education and the Sentinel-Echo.

According to Superintendent Doug Bennett, the accused teacher, Kendra Baker, heard the statement from a student then proceeded to write it on her board. The statement was not a part of the curriculum or lesson plan and was a blatant opinion following the recent Presidential election.

“She wrote it on her own, and she wanted to write it on the board. She realized it was inappropriate,” Bennett said.

I keep my beliefs to myself, unless asked specifics about it and everyone else should to. The point of the article was not me saying ya or na to heaven but to point out that religion has no place in public schools. My statement "see you in hell, bitch" was meant to point out if Democrats all of the hell as this person believes than she definitely is going to hell and as a Democrat, I'll see her there.

Would you say I was calling people stupid If I said there was no bigfoot or Loch Ness monster? Everybody is entitled to their own beliefs as long as the are not forced on us. emphasizes that this statement did not have any part in a class lesson - that makes it a violation (turns out, it was a direct violation of school district policy). Scary part is that she teaches civics...waahh!

but it does not sound like that was the case. If she had written it for discussion on political parties and partisanship or something along those lines than it would have been appropriate, and I'll admit the article doesn't give a ton of info, but it sounds as though she wrote it because she believed it.

23. Now, wait a minute! Don't make a snap judgment.

First of all, if you look at the pic, the quote is at the very top of the board, a place most of us teachers (I'm home ill today--otherwise, I'd be teaching my ACT prep class right now) use if we're going to put anything underneath it. It sounds like the students were having a discussion, so she put a contentious statement a student made on the top of the board, indicating they were going to discuss it further.

In another article, the mother of the student who sent the picture to the superintendent and the media (not to the principal, mind you, and not to the teacher herself--why follow procedure if you can get on the news and create drama?) is now saying her daughter's been bullied and she's pulling her daughter out to homeschool her. Something tells me that this isn't the first drama incident from this daughter, and something tells me that she isn't going to be homeschooled for long.

We don't know why the girl forwarded the picture, either. We're all assuming that it's because the student disagreed with the statement and the teacher agreed with it, but given other clues, it could just as easily be the opposite. We haven't heard from the teacher, the principal, or other students in the class, just the daughter and the mom who's saying this is part of a pattern of bullying and abuse of her daughter (which may or may not be true, but she hasn't said anything publicly about what that bullying was and why her daughter's being bullied).

I'm going to cut the teacher some slack here. Class discussions often get contentious, and it's not always easy to control them.

Anyone else read this and wonder if Kendra Baker was really calling out a student who said it? The context of this story is missing. The superintendent almost sounds like he's covering for some incensed tea party parent, whose child was humiliated in class for saying dumb shit.

The thing I get from this is that Righties CANNOT stop themselves from spewing hatred at everyone else. This is because the RW Entertainment Complex has broken this country apart as never before. I can honestly say, as a middle-aged woman who grew up in the mountains of Kentucky, that people did NOT think like this when I was a kid. A teacher feeling the need to link religion and politics inseparably in the classroom like this was not something that anyone would have conceived of as happening.
