'Famine is setting in': UN court orders Israel to unblock Gaza food aid

The International Court of Justice has ordered Israel to allow unimpeded access of food aid into Gaza, where sections of the population are facing imminent starvation, in a significant legal rebuke to Israel’s claim it is not blocking aid deliveries.

A panel of judges at the UN’s top court, which is already considering a complaint from South Africa that Israel is committing genocide in the Palestinian territory, issued the ruling after an emergency measure in January obliging Israel to admit emergency aid.

The judges, who were unanimous in their decision, said Palestinians in Gaza were facing worsening conditions of life, and famine and starvation were spreading. “The court observes that Palestinians in Gaza are no longer facing only a risk of famine … but that famine is setting in,” the judges said.

In its legally binding order, the court told Israel to take “all necessary and effective measures to ensure, without delay, in full cooperation with the United Nations, the unhindered provision at scale by all concerned of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance” including food, water, fuel and medical supplies.

Note: I know more Egyptian websites than others in most of the Middle East.

I conjecture:

1. The Middle East blames the US for supplying Israel and
2. The Middle East blames the US for not saying anything against Israel for MONTHS.
3. The Middle East likely has not supported Hamas. BUT any goodwill that working class and middle class populace has had in favor of Israel has evaporated.

...

4. I believe that Israel doesn't want peace anymore. If this is the case, then their neighbors won't either.

The Israeli authorities have decided that they must:

Fortify existing settlements.
Create new settlements.
Legalize the minority of settlements that are illegal under Israeli law.
Arm the settlers.
Protect settlers committing crimes under Israeli law against non-citizen residents (related to the Biden administration sanctioning some Israeli settlers).
Create conditions in Gaza in which non-combatant residents cannot live (e.g. obstruct food, destroy infrastructure).
Continue with and consolidate the "one state" reality of Israel ruling over millions of people deprived of citizenship and voting rights.

Now, the United States also has decisions to make.

Comments:

The Court's Observations: The ICJ noted that the living conditions in Gaza have significantly deteriorated, with Palestinians facing severe deprivation of food and other basic necessities, leading to the onset of famine.

Decision on Provisional Measures: The Court decided to indicate additional provisional measures, reaffirming the measures indicated in its previous order of 26 January 2024, and specifying new measures to address the current situation. These measures are intended to ensure the provision of urgently needed humanitarian assistance and protect the rights of Palestinians in Gaza under the Genocide Convention.

Specific Measures Indicated: The ICJ unanimously required Israel to take all necessary measures, in cooperation with the United Nations, to ensure the provision of basic services and humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in Gaza. It also ordered Israel to prevent any actions by its military that would violate the rights of Palestinians under the Genocide Convention, including hindering the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Reporting Requirement: Israel is required to submit a report to the Court on measures taken to implement the order within one month.
