NBC News on Friday announced that it had hired Ronna McDaniel, the former Republican National Committee chair who has repeatedly attacked the network and its journalists, assailed the news media as fake news and promoted false claims around the 2020 vote, as an on-air commentator ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
It couldnt be a more important moment to have a voice like Ronnas on the team, Carrie Budoff Brown, senior vice president of politics at NBC News, said in a memo to staff.

She is a journalist who rose through the rank and the former editor of politico.
Seems out of character for somebody who is on the board of director of an organization dedicated to promote journalistic integrity (see the wiki bio).

(9,012 posts)Brown should be either fired or demoted and not allowed to hire again.
Consequences.

(7,629 posts)She wrote the memo to the staff so she was involved but probably it had to get signed off by higher level executives.

Once again, the decision was based around viewership numbers and personal draw (flamboyant character?) - with the thought of attracting Republican eyes. What clearly did not enter the calculus in any measure at all - was any factor of journalistic integrity or ethic. But then, in today's world - how exactly does one attract the Republican base?
Dan Rather's comment
Id like to weigh in on NBC news' recent decision to hire Ronna McDaniel. By giving her a platform, NBC has given legitimacy to the lies she helped the former president spread. Now we come to the why. Why would NBC News hire someone as controversial? Heres the reason: News gathering is a business, and the networks have prioritized widening their audience. They feel the need to show their Republican bona fides by hiring conservative voices. But that is the crux of the problem. Which Republicans? Trump loyalists who are election deniers and January 6 apologists? To me, that doesnt seem like the answer. .....
Think. Again.

"No organization, particularly a newsroom, can succeed unless it is cohesive and aligned," NBCUniversal News Group chairman Cesar Conde wrote in a Tuesday memo. "Over the last few days, it has become clear that this appointment undermines that goal."
"Our initial decision was made because of our deep commitment to presenting our audiences with a widely diverse set of viewpoints and experiences, particularly during these consequential times," he continued. " [W]e will redouble our efforts to seek voices that represent different parts of the political spectrum."
