(35,378 posts)I have heard so much negative information on it I don't know what to think. Every doctor I talk to hates it and every small business person I know hates it.

(594 posts)she is Director of Nurses because as a result of Obamacare the company will no longer offer employer-paid insurance. We will start examining our alternatives early next year. Medicare won't be the same when the corporatists are done with it. We may have to leave the country. I hope I have enough money saved should it come to that. Maybe Australia or New Zealand, neither which I know much about. I predict a lot of people will leave the United States, including a mess of doctors. This will be a sea change. Many people will leave this time that might not have left before. America is not what it was; I look around even my neighborhood and don't recognize the place. Until five years ago we had quite a neighborhood. It is all but gone.

(18,791 posts)First, it doesn't look as though Massachusetts and RomneyCare have shut down that state. I hope that it will work equally well for all of America...despite the best intentions of the Insurance and Pharma industries to destroy all of us.
Second, I have a sneaking hunch that doctor upon doctor will not be leaving the country. YUP! I've heard breathless Puke/Bagger garbage out of some of my Mom's (90+) provider's OFFICE *staff*...I just tell them not to go there AND wait and see what the facts are...not what FuksNews, blasting in the lobby says.
FYI, I've asked the office manager in two of my Mom's offices to change the channel...one was mad...the other was fine with it.
Now, I'm a bit confused about your wife, as Director of Nurses at a hospital, she will be leaving (quitting?) because she will not have employer PAID (as in fully paid for?) insurance? The hospital company will not offer insurance, any kind of insurance to employees, other than letting them fend in the pools? If the hospital employees over 50 employees, they are going to have to pay the health "tax" (if you will)? Correct?
I'm just not sure yet, how such companies are going to feel that they are getting a better deal, taking such action.
I guess we need some additional details, in order to look further into the ACA requirements.

(594 posts)the proximate cause for the ending of employer paid health insurance at this hospital; then, the fees attached to the hospital for the new insurance is enough for them to stop offering paid insurance to the top managers at the facilities as well as reduced pricing for all employees; or maybe it is just being used as a ruse for change, substantive or not. I don't know. My wife pays nothing for health insurance and I get it at a nominal price. Yes, we could pay for the insurance as I am sure there will be a phase-in period but there are other things about to happen with health insurance and taxes that will be unpleasant. Now, the facility is working on obtaining a waiver on fees, and because of the type of care this hospital does, they may well get it. I am glad that everyone will be insured after Obamacare, although I was pushing for Single Payer. But its implementation leaves quite a few harmed, including us. If we stay in the US, where we have always lived, we'll go on Medicare, which I have a suspicion will be a disaster for diabetics like me. It may be time to go, in one way or another.
pinto
(106,886 posts)As far as Medicare goes, talk to your medical provider. Your suspicions may be unfounded. I'm a high end client of Medicare and it does well by me. My brother in law is diabetic and his care is well covered under Medicare, not a disaster by any means.
The end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it is not near, my fellow DUer.

(594 posts)know better than I. But, yes, that is the plan: to stop offering paid insurance for anyone.

(106,886 posts)professional organizations, i.e. a state nursing association? Might be worth a look.
On Medicare, again I encourage you to look at the coverage. It's pretty comprehensive, especially for diabetes related care. (side note) I'm sure you probably know this already, but "Do you accept assignment?" is a useful query with Medicare providers. If they do, they accept Medicare reimbursement as payment in full.
Good luck, I hope it all works out for you both.

(18,791 posts)we can hardly wait!
We have 4 total employees...5 if you include my business partner (I actually work for a BIG company and have my insurance there.)
We had a small business policy, that was canceled (thank you United Healthcare...*finger*) SEVERAL years ago. They simply gave us 30 days notice and said that they were not servicing small accounts like ours.
SO...my partner has been through several crappy "discount" plans, only to end up with a high deductible thing...that also stinks. One employee is happy with his crappy discount plan (go figure)...2 others went on spouse's insurance where the spouse works...and the last had some "pre-existing" condition (that we didn't know about and still don't know about) that they couldn't get insurance for a couple years...finally, they got a low income plan (requiring us to reduce his hours).
We are MORE than happy to see how the ACA will work. Adding, we are a franchise and many other VERY small owners are very happy to see what the ACA will bring in the line of healthcare.
We can't afford healthcare now...how could it possibly be any worse?????

(35,378 posts)health-care benefits to their employees. The complaints I have heard are just like me and you they say they don't know what it involves. They don't know what added taxes they will have, they figure their premiums will go up, they say they don't know if they will have to cut employees or maybe discontinue their insurance. One told me the other day the thing was passed two years ago and they haven't received any informantion from the government. The only information they have heard is maybe just misinformation the Republicans and right wing media has put out. The Administration has done a horrible job in explaining the plan I feel like I think most people do that they just don't want us to know the down side of it. They say you can keep you kids on your insurance until 26, the insurance company can't drop you if you get sick, you can't be denied because of a pre-existing condition. That's all fine but can they raise your rates where you can't pay them? I know the pre-existing illness is BS, a friend has diabetes and yes he can get insurance, the cheapest rate he found is at $23,000 a year and that is just for him. He has gone for three years with no insurance.

(12,634 posts)neighborhood I've lived in for a long time and was amazed to see a car parked in a nearby driveway with this bumper sticker on it. I've never seen anything like it here. At first I thought it must have a "don't" line through the heart, so I kept slowing down and skirting the curb every time I drove by, looking for the "hook", but I never found it. Eventually one day I came by and it was gone. My apparent interest must have been noticed and mis-interpreted by the owner (and who's to blame her/him?) Eventually I'll get to meet this neighbor and will explain. This posting is the only other time I've seen it. I'd be afraid to put it on my car here because my car is used, unlike that neighbor, whose car is always safely in the driveway.
