Death of Nex Benedict update

Owasso Police Department
Investigative Update OPD Case # 2024-3316 – Investigation into the death of Owasso High School Student Nex Benedict
From the beginning of this investigation, Owasso Police observed many indications that this death was the result of suicide. However, investigators did not wish to confirm that information without the final results being presented by the Oklahoma Medical Examiner's Office. The Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s report has now been made public. See Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s report for Cause of Death and means. The Owasso Police Department would like to take this moment to inform anyone in crisis or contemplating suicide of the Oklahoma Mental Health Lifeline, just call or text 988.

It seemed odd that Nex went home that night, then returned to the hospital the next day and passed away that second day. The wording in the police reports was that the death wasn't because of the fight, though the media - especially social media - glossed right over that part or assumed a cover-up of some sort.

My initial thought was a potential suicide, but didn't want to speculate because that was just one possibility. Tragic, regardless.

The fact is, the suicide rate among LGBTQ+ teens is extraordinarily high.

It's usually driven by ostracism from family or peers, as it almost certainly was in this case. However, we can count on the usual suspects pointing to this as "proof" that the treatment Nex received at school had nothing to do with their death, and blaming us "woke liberals" for trying to profit off the tragedy.
