This is amazing. Slideshow explaining the services and the process:

I signed up to be notified if/when they come to my area. FiOS still isn't here. Our only option is cable. Blech.
Their site: https://fiber.google.com/about/
Edit to add coverage map: https://fiber.google.com/cities/#header=check

(67,441 posts)"free internet" costs $300 "construction fee"
Ruby the Liberal
(26,219 posts)It doesn't use existing coaxle/phone lines. Thats $25 a month for 12 months, no interest.
Glad you have cheaper options available to you. I don't. No landline and can't have sattelite, so this is the next best thing to paying for cable.

(13,397 posts)I would be happy to pay $300 to get onto Google's fiber network.

(18,775 posts)They have this employee policy where their employees get to spend 20% of their work time on 'passion projects'. It makes for an engaged and creative work environment and google gets a steady flow of new and cool ideas.
I can see where an environment like that can't help but generate lots of new products, but damn, it sure does feel like Google is taking over everything.

(21,691 posts)They're in Kansas City, KANSAS - which is NOT where the business and money is. They're in Wyandotte County, right next to the real Kansas City - about as close as you can be without actually entering the city limits or Jackson County - or Missouri.
When I was there recently, I got let in on the whole deal - it's hilarious.

(26,219 posts)I am in a historic district (my house was built during the civil war). It was our local historical preservation whatever board that declined Verizon from expanding and offering some competition.
Meh.

(26,219 posts)I know they have been quietly buying up infrastructure the last several years, but this is pole wired (not underground). Did not know that power grids with troubleshooting technology was in the mix. Go, google, go!
