Ahhh, Shrove Tuesday. Sun is shining. I annoyed a trumper. Snow melting.

The weather is lovely today, after a nasty weekend, so I ran errands. I needed several items from Dollar Tree, picked them up, and got in line. The guy in front of me was talking to the clerk about a huge bequest (18 million) being made to a college here. Said he didn't know which one, but what a boost for education. I told him that it was an alum from my college, and the entire CC community is still in a bit of shock. Then he smiled and said, "Maybe they could use some of that money to get rid of #####," and left.

The clerk (with whom I usually exchange pleasantries when she checks me out), said, "That wasn't nice. I love #####. I voted for him." I said, "why, since he doesn't give a damn about you?" She sputtered, then said, "It isn't nice when people have murder in their hearts." To which I replied, "you mean, like the man you love and vote for?" She sputtered again, "No, he does not". I said, "oh, I guess bragging about shooting someone on 5th Ave, or inviting an enemy to do whatever he wants to our allies is okay?" No response. I took my receipt and left.

And, no, I am not giving up annoying trumpers and magats who get in my face for lent. Why do you ask?

who relies on "don't piss of the customer."

I have a lot of similar interactions and I always try to detect the leaning (and personal vulnerability) of the clerk/others before I engage.

Most times they are very accepting and with winks/nods we understand we are on the same page.

was the one who made the remarks about loving ##### and voting for him, in response to the guy ahead of me, who had already left. I do not start such conversations with staff anywehere, because I assume they have the good sense NOT to make political comments on duty (although I am told by a friend who manages a convenience store in a VERY red area that customers deliberately try to engage him so that they can be assholes). I simply responded to her unrequested paean to #####.

I lay no claim to being a morally superior being.

What an amazing bequest for any college! I hope your college does amazing things with it!

It kills me when someone equates a comment like "##### doesn't give a damn about you" with someone having "murder in their heart." NOT the same thing, Dollar Tree lady. The two can go hand in hand, but that is a ridiculous and insulting assumption to make!

Hard to tell whether you made an impression on her, but you never know who might have overheard that exchange, the same way you heard the guy ahead of you. I firmly believe that such conversations are never truly wasted, that things we say and do can have positive effects that we never even know about. I hope this is one of those times!

Side note: My daughter also went to a college with the initials CC, but I knew it couldn't be the same one, because hers was in deep blue Chicago.

usually just exchange very banal remarks as she checks me out. The "murder in their hearts" was actually, I assumed, directed at the guy saying to get rid of #####. It is a real pity that I only had a few items to check out. I could have had more fun!

Like you, I tend to believe that whatever we put out there into the universe has an impact, even if only in multiplying energies ( the 100 monkeys experiment comes to mind). I will hope as you do.

I know that my school, Colorado College, will do amazing things with that money, and I intend to be around to see it!

preference for a paterfamilias, at least from a clinical perspective. But I am one of those strange people who, even from the youngest age, fought against that kind of control and dominance. It is basically the reason I was excommunicated (even though I was basically already gone!), and basically why I continue to fight to this day.

Not in the sense of just being alive but (oh my God), I should have done this instead of...or I messed up last night, week, month.
They seem to think that other people "Really have it down Baby"
Other people have perfect lives and here I am, not doing ALL the right things.
You just want to say. "Look, most people have this security wall, simply because they don't want to show all the screw-ups
and dumb-ass stuff that they've done in their lives"
The bottom line is: You probably don't need a strong daddy to show you everything in life. Daddy is not going to always be there.
Stop your self-pity, go down that dark tunnel, do stupid shit, embarrass yourself and Learn, Learn, Learn.
You'll be much happier in the end.
Trump is way more scared than you are, Toots. He just covers it all up.

We have devolved as a nation. People don't read anymore. Ignorance reins in this country. I have family in Europe and Argentina. They know more about U S. history and current events than we do living here. As a country, we don't like intellectuals. I remember one of my Political Science professors saying that part of the reason that Adlai Stevenson didn't have a chance of being elected president was the American people's distate for intellectuals. We praise the "common folk". I would prefer a president who is smarter and more knowledgeable than myself.

this country, and I have been witness to it since I was in elementary school. Like you, I want our leaders to be a whole lot smarter than I am, or why would I want them in charge? I prefer to be around smart people, part of the reason I am on DU. I want to learn and grow every single day.

Sadly, there are far too many people in this country who do not feel that way.
