Hamas, UNRWA both embedded in fabric of Gaza, org head admits

In an interview with The New York Times on Friday, Philippe Lazzarini, UNRWA’s commissioner general, said, “Our employees are part of the social fabric in Gaza and its ecosystem. And as part of the social fabric in Gaza, you also have Hamas,” alluding to the organizations' connections to terror group Hamas.

This interview occurred against the backdrop of the exposure of UNRWA’s Hamas ties after the October 7 massacre and the Hamas tunnels revealed underneath the UNRWA headquarters in Gaza.

The Times revealed that ten years ago when a senior UN legal officer in Gaza began investigating whether several of its employees were members of Hamas, he began receiving death threats, culminating in a live grenade sent to his office. This officer was evacuated from the region. Several of these instances occurred and remained unreported.

Although UNRWA says that it has taken reports that its employees were also members of Hamas seriously, Israel says that UNRWA has not gone far enough to root out Hamas in the organization and was unwilling to clean up the issue systematically, the Times reported.

Of course the relief agencies working in Gaza have relationships with Hamas. There is still no evidence that UNRWA is involved in any military actions or provides any support for those Hamas activities.

I can't see any self-respecting international organization being unable to weed out supporters of terrorism, let alone members of a terrorist regime, from the ranks of their employees.

I don't see the distinction. If the UNRWA workers are Hamas and are involved, and the UNRWA turns a blind eye to it, they are culpable.

From the op:

The Times revealed that ten years ago when a senior UN legal officer in Gaza began investigating whether several of its employees were members of Hamas, he began receiving death threats, culminating in a live grenade sent to his office. This officer was evacuated from the region. Several of these instances occurred and remained unreported.

I'm not excusing the UN or the UNRWA by any means, but this kind of thing says a lot about the sort of pressure that anyone trying to make significant changes would have faced. Not everyone is brave and/or altruistic enough to press on under such circumstances. It sucks, but humans are only human.

Appeasing the blackmailers is a failure by definition. UNRWA folded to the Hamas intimidation. What other UN mission you know of that did that?

The agency is effectively an arm and a supply chain of Hamas.

The thought just underlines that there is no real path forward with Hamas running Gaza.

except for the testimony of hostages held by UNRWA members, weapons built and stored in UNRWA schools and Palestinians themselves who have admitted to the very close relationship, tunnels under and into UNRWA facilities...

Let me guess- you can believe anything "Israel" says and the Palestinians were paid off by "Israel"

They are held up as "paragons" of "truthtopower", when in reality, it is nothing more than "truthtoJEWpower." The masks are gone and few seem to care, and those of us who do, have an uphill battle.
