The Secret Ingredients for Marijuana Legalization: Moms and Hispanics

A few days before last Tuesday's election, New Approach Washington, the group pushing a ballot issue to legalize marijuana in the state, posted its final ad of the campaign. The spot featured a "Washington mom" -- a woman in her mid-40s, sitting on her porch, flanked by pumpkins -- who took the viewer through the assorted restrictions and benefits both minors and businesses would see once the measure, Initiative 502, was implemented: ID checks.Fewer profits for the cartels. Increased funds for schools. More time for police to "focus on violent crime instead." In short, all of the top concerns that an average mom in the Evergreen State would seem to have about making pot legal.

But New Approach's ad was about more than just capturing the votes of a major demographic -- the same one that helped reelect President Obama and the one that kept GOP Senate hopefuls Richard Mourdock and Todd Akin at bay. Legalization advocates have found that female support tends to be a leading indicator for marijuana measures. In the case of both California's 2010 and Colorado's 2006 votes, sagging support among women preceded a collapse in men's support too. In California, for instance, support from women saw a 14-point swing against legalization over the final six weeks, dragging support from men under 50 percent.

"Historically, as soon as women really start to create a [gender] gap, a marijuana measure gets killed," says Allen St. Pierre, executive director of National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. "If women get weak-kneed, the men will start to drop."

and the number one thing I have learned about this issue is that Matters of Cannabis Prohibition are NO Different Than Pay Inequality/Birth Control/Abortion Bans---Womens Rights To Health Care and etcs!

It's about basic freedom obstructed by nonsense "Nanny State" interference in my rights to choose what I do with my own body free of
unreasonable statutorily mandated impositions of anothers beliefs forced upon us. Period.

Are you buying into the antiquated "It's For The Kids" argument???
It's a Fear tactic-period. Worried about kids getting easier access? Then legalize and
regulate! Unsure if that Works? How many kids are "schlepping beer and
cigs" in the school yards? Yet right now, I'm told it would take me about 20
minutes to "score some weed"...Black Market Dealers Recruit
Our Kids To Sell Drugs For Them! Wake Up Soccer Moms!

Society reaps absolutely No benefit from Cannabis Prohibition. We are NOT Safer
when a Cannabis Consumer is Arrested/Prosecuted---Instead we've tied up And
Wasted the DA's FTE Budget ($$$), courts time ($$), Mandated victims of these
senseless laws to court mandated treatment at the victims expense (sorta like
Unnecessary Statutorily Mandated TransVaginal Ultrasounds)....To Legally
process these "victims of law" is No different than
investigating/prosecuting a woman after a miscarriage...senseless.

Tax Payers Funding The WoD's--an est $75 Billion Annually (My state has to
contribute 1% of this expenditure to the Feds and we cannot afford it--how
about your state-ever think to ask?) ---indeed the major focus/$$$ investment
is on the Least Harmful Phytomedicine/Cannabis---I would like to ask these
reluctant "Moms/Hispanics/Women": Wouldn't the $1.3 Trilion Dollars
wasted during the past 40 years been more wisely invested in Harm Reduction
Education Programs instead? Isn't it More powerful to equip our kids, friends
and family members with the Facts about Anything we consume so we are empowered
to make an Informed decision regarding Anything we put in our bodies??? Too
much fast food/sugary drinks can cause serious health consequences, misuse of
OTC Drugs can be fatal, Adverse Reactions to Prescription Drugs cause hundreds
of thousands of deaths every year, even too much Caffeine is harmful---lets
don't get started on Tobacco and Alcohol...yet Factual Education is sorely
lacking everywhere Except Tobacco. We now know the Power of Harm Reduction
Education because we have taught our kids in schools and at home the serious
consequences of smoking tobacco---because of that approach, kids are making
informed decisions as their friends offer them cigarettes--they say
"no"--as the older generation of tobacco users die off-the fatalities
(currently approx 450k fatalities annually) directly related to tobacco use are
falling. Since when do matters of Health
Care belong in the Justice/Legal Systems?
Well, since they’ve discovered the Huge and Enormous Profits they
earn.

Yes, we watch our families and
friends get caught up in the legal system at great cost, both socially and
personally, so all things Law Enforcement can Keep their Budgets/Jobs. What do we,
the tax payers get in return? Zero!
Today after 40 years—we have More drugs on the street, More dangerous
drugs, more Pure, cheaper than ever and more accessible to our kids than Ever!
The whole point of allowing these tax dollar investments is to make society
safer—to reduce crime. In reality the
opposite has occurred. Why not transfer
some of those tax dollars into opening up clinics for addicts for $3. a day.
They get clean drugs, clean needles and treatment instead of breaking into our
homes, robbing us, hurting us to support a $300-$500. a day habit? Why keep
these people in a revolving door system where the treatment is inadequate
without much hope for recovery and becoming productive citizens again? Because Prisons get about $3000.00 per
prisoner per month!

Drug Laws and Policies: It's Discrimination. Stop looking at the
"title" of all Denials Of Personal Freedom To Choose and look at the
under-lying Consequence of these "same type" of draconian laws, rules
and policies that affect women’s right to choose, our rights to choose who we
wish to marry, our rights to speak and so on.

When people stop assuming this issue is simply about "getting
stoned"-.(that point has long since left the building, btw) It’s about
freedom. So stop listening to Reefer Madness rhetoric, seek the science and facts-apply common sense and fiscal responsibility--only then can we progress effectively and sanely.

FACT: The Most Dangerous Element Surrounding The Use Of Cannabis Are The Laws, Rules And Policies That Govern It's Use.

If All Drugs Were Legalized, studies show that Less than 1 tenth of 1 % would
try Heroin, Cocaine, Meth etc. Drug Laws Do NOT Deter Drug Use. Anyone who
wants to try any illegal substance will do so. Would You try Heroin if it were
legalized? Ahh, I thought not.

One last point: Your kids who might get caught "smokin' a doobie",
gets ran through the legal system--will be affected for the Rest of their long
lives. Denial of college loans, housing and their earning capacity as a result
will be 30% less than their peers--for Life!

Is this really the system you want for your kids? I do not want that for mine!

Educate yourselves and make a reasoned and informed decision based upon science, fiscal responsibility and common sense...and if you don't like Cannabis? Don't consume it---I choose to not consume alcohol because I don't like it. I would never choose an abortion---but I would Never Deny You those very personal choices.

You deserve the right to choose what is best for you--and so do I.
