Limbaugh advertiser backlash DIRECTLY responsible for radio industry downturn: –radio network exec

Limbaugh advertiser backlash DIRECTLY responsible for radio industry downturn: –radio network exec

Rush Limbaugh once likened an advertiser boycott to "losing a couple of french fries in the container when it’s delivered to you in the drive thru. You don’t even notice it."

The radio networks might choose to disagree. Financially distressed radio corporation Dial Global "started to experience the slow down the day after" Limbaugh attacked law student Sandra Fluke.

More Limbaugh advertiser boycott, here.

I worked in radio for over 35 years. Since deregulation most radio station owners have been following the Bain model of management. Buying stations, leveraging them to borrow money to buy more stations, while stripping equity, and downsizing staff. Most stations run on voice tracking and auto pilot. The last small station I worked for that carried Rush, paid about $1000 a month for the program. Still it's cheaper than having a live local program of any format, just as long as the carrier is modulated.

Radio stations that carry this crap are useless to the communities in which they are located.

As for Rush, couldn't happen to a lovelier guy.

OTOH, I was picking up my nephew at his high school the other day, and spent the time waiting for him to emerge by scanning the AM frequencies on my car's radio. Between the right-wing talk stations, the country music stations, the classic rock stations (I like these), several Spanish-language stations, and the Christian stations, I did discover one station of interest. It was playing, of all things, polka music, much of it from old-time polka bands from the 1940s-50s. I added it to my presets, and it was playing when the 15-year-old nephew got in the car.

"What the hell is that music?" he inquired after fastening his seat belt.

I replied, "It is the music of your ancestors."

He returned to his usual taciturn grunting. I left the radio tuned to the Polka station. Perhaps I'll push that preset daily when picking him up from school.

They'll learn to change their focus eventually, if they want to continue to make money. Radio is a great medium--when everyone shares
