Effects of war?

I am wondering about all the images of WWII of cities in Europe flattened by the war where did the civilians go to not get bombed?

1. Bomb shelters or the countryside

If they were lucky. In many cases they weren't and those pics have hundreds or thousands of bodies under the rubble. Germany lost something like 500-600,000 people in the bombings alone.

The ones from Gaza I mean. They are horrific. War is horrific. It’s a war. Why do people expect it to look like a ping pong match?

Those that couldn't via means, patriotism, etc. well, you hoped to be spared or for a quick death. A lot of it could have been avoided if there was unconditional surrender to ALL of the allies, some German leaders held on to a ridiculous dream if they surrendered to the UK, USA, French government in exile, etc. they would suddenly turn their war against the Russians. Dangers of believing your own bullshit.
