Is anyone going? Anyone hear about the plans and events surrounding inauguration in January? Anyone hear what celebs will be singing, etc?

(1,385 posts)There are always a number of balls, which are jammed, and expensive.
For the inauguration itself, there will be invitation areas "close" to the Capitol or in special viewing stands for the parade.
Alternatively, there will be places to watch the inauguration OR the parade. It is not possible to do both unless you are very VIP. Personally, I prefer being in the crowd, hearing and seeing the speeches and entertainment on the jumbotrons to the parade.
Security will be EXTREMELY tight. Check the website for what is allowed or you may have to abandon some of your belongings. Come early and dress for the weather.
Use the Metro to get around. Some stations will be closed, so check this ahead of time.
If you can, a bike is a good way to get around. Last time there was valet parking for bikes in a secure area.
Hope to see you!

The grounds were not completely filled and we just happened to be walking in the area.
Other musicians were practicing for the big day to follow.
We didn't go to the Swearing Inn -- we attended a party and had a great time watching the events unfold on television.
A group of us rented a lovely townhouse about 5 blocks from the White House for the week before the Big Event.
On the day of the Swearing in of Obama, we were standing in the parking lot getting ready to go to get " drinks and food" and all of a sudden we saw a fancy looking Helicopter. All of a sudden, neighbors came out and they were shouting..... " It's that Bastard Bush!"
Everybody was calling him names and using one of their fingers as they gave him a " We Won" and we were jumping up and down and laughing.
Not going this time, this California Girl does not want to be that cold again.
We'll have a Party and watch it unfold on television.

(47,542 posts)Jan 20th 2013 is on a Sunday. The country does not do inauguration on a Sunday, so the President will take the office in a private ceremony.
Then, on the 21st, there will be a public inauguration.
I suspect that the festivities will be subdued. We are, after all, still in a recession.
At least, I think it will be smart to have lower key celebrations.
