be adjusted downward. The same goes with disability.
Not that I am saying that this is a good thing, especially for African American men because their median age expectancy already guarantees that almost half of the males paying into SSI will never see a dime.
But again, life expectancy for African American males is skewed since the mortality rate for younger African Americans is higher than the rest of the population and so these potential recipients will not have paid much into SSI.
The problem with raising the age expectancy is that more people will be working beyond the traditional retirement of 65 and so the turn over of employment will be affected.
But then again, more people are delaying their entry into the work force by going to school.
There is a lot more to the considerations of raising the age when you can start taking your full benefits than meets the eye.
Having brought this up, I personally don't see why there is such a push to raise the retirement age. Once the Basketball in the Cobra that is Boomer demographic bunt start to pass on to that big commune in the sky, the demographics should even out.
The best way to sanely solve these problems is to stop spending more money than we take in. This started to happen when the rates for capital gains taxes were lowered starting during the Reagan years. But that's another story for a different post.
Again, far too often the people in control of our country are the people who have the worry least about as they close in on their golden years. How can they even relate to someone who is looking forward to retirement and suddenly discover that the rules are being changed once again, and not in their favor?

(14,087 posts)What are we supposed to retire from??? And how do we support ourselves while we're unemployed waiting for social security to be doled out later?
That's so fucking unrealistic.

(2,294 posts)They want the older workers to retire so they can be replaced with younger ones.
But the older ones will feel they have to stay to get a better check every month for the rest of their lives -- it's not a big enough check that you can afford to shrink it.
after paying (thus far) into the SS system for thirty years, would I be willing to be paid LESS??
