It may still. Everyone is texting etc all of the time.

Being a nation of immigrants and with required military service, you see a very broad selection of young people in the IDF. It is also a unifying force in the county. You tend to stay with your unit your entire time (active and reserves)

Mediterranean women are stunning assuming of course they are allowed to wear something other than a burqa. There is a regional aspect to it I cannot rationally explain, but its there.

"The image of a dead preschooler cradled by the prime ministers of Egypt and Gaza in a hospital hallway has drawn attention to the dangers Gaza's children face in this crowded urban battle zone .

Children make up half of Gaza's population of 1.6 million and seem to be everywhere in the current round of cross-border fighting between Israel and Gaza 's militant Hamas rulers."

There will be lots of pitch-black gallows humor among the fighters on both sides, too. These are normal human coping mechanisms to deal with the fear of death or maiming that accompanies going into such situations.

The situation in Gaza just sucks all around. After decades of back-and-forth, I really couldn't care less about blamecasting. People will die...for absolutely nothing.

that so many people on these boards are so against Israel defending itself from Hamas, which has been given a free pass by MANY left-wingers due to them fighting an ally of the United States, even though Hamas does things like conscript women and children, murder anyone who doesn't follow their version of extremist Sharia Law and bombard Israel with rockets on a daily basis.

That, and hiding their ammunition in civilian residences so that way they cry foul when the IDF destroys some.

The current Israeli government isn't making the situation any easier, but...

Something that some people tend to forget is that it doesn't matter what kind of government Israel has - from Shimon Peres to Ariel Sharon to Ehud Barak - Hamas has ALWAYS been attacking Israel and will never stop until they are destroyed.

Just because Netanyahu(spelling probably off) is a few monks short of a choir doesn't mean that Israel has any less of a right to defend itself from total destruction.

You obviously support Isreal. That's fine. I do see fault on both sides but do tend to side with the Palestinians. We need the a third party to come in and tell both sides to quit acting like children and to sit down and negotiate. I think that if Isreal would stop leveling neighborhoods and building Isreali settlements then you could possibly get the civilians to stop supporting Hamas. It is Hamas who helps the people rebuild after Isreal has torn down their neighborhoods. You have to figure out why the civilians are supporting Hamas and address those issues. And both Isreal and Palestine will have to be willing to give up ground and build a two party state. A two party state has always and still is the only solution. The question is how do you get both sides to agree. Isreal has stated before that the stopping of building of settlements will not be part of the negotiations. That is a mistake in my opinion.

soldiers have been behaving like this before combat like forever, serious.

Ok, there were no photos in Roman times, but you can bet your dying ass that the troopers of the Tenth legion joked and smiled as well... before they marched to Massada. Or the second Legion, before guarding the Hadrian Wall, (On and that one, from ostraca we know the life of the roman legionaire was just as boring and of complaints of the usual suspects, as any modern military)

There are no photos of Greece either, but I am willing to bet that soldiers at Marathon did something similar before combat.

Read some Shakespeare, he captured this well in prose that we all love to quote to this day... so did Herodotus by the way.

What we need is for people to realize that before combat troops around the world will behave in ways like this.

It is, I think, a way to avoid thinking that perhaps you are mortal... and for the 19 year old soldiers, and the 20 somethings junior officers, that is a hell of a reality check. Oh don't worry, those who are exposed to combat, regardless of national army, will have a few nightmares for the rest of their days... if they do not buy the farm... and in some cases will not be functional. That is the horror of war.

Oh and that has nothing to do with what national uniform you wear either.

Just check the photos I posted from other wars, going back to the Civil War.
