Being a nation of immigrants and with required military service, you see a very broad selection of young people in the IDF. It is also a unifying force in the county. You tend to stay with your unit your entire time (active and reserves)
Mediterranean women are stunning assuming of course they are allowed to wear something other than a burqa. There is a regional aspect to it I cannot rationally explain, but its there.

"The image of a dead preschooler cradled by the prime ministers of Egypt and Gaza in a hospital hallway has drawn attention to the dangers Gaza's children face in this crowded urban battle zone .
Children make up half of Gaza's population of 1.6 million and seem to be everywhere in the current round of cross-border fighting between Israel and Gaza 's militant Hamas rulers."

The Egyptians and Jordanians signed treaties in order to extort money from the USA for peace...and a cold peace it is.

(33 posts)If Israeli troops were here and set up Martial Law, patrolled our streets all armored up carrying automatic weapons with back up from armored vehicles and aircraft, breaking down our doors with impunity, stopping anyone at will, I'd be angry enough to start killing them too. Rockets landing in their back yards would be the least of their problems! Geeez dude and you are a combat vet! Wake up!
glacierbay
(2,477 posts)Presently there are no Israeli troops in the Gaza strip, but if Hamas doesn't knock off their shit, then there will be.
I, myself, would rather see both sides back off and rethink what's about to happen and then work towards a comprehensive peace treaty, but I will always back Israel.

(25,576 posts)front men, the sacrificial 'shock troops' for the long-term destruction of Israel and the Jews? Like the Republicans, the Arab governments and powers that be think very very long term. If it takes a thousand years, they will rid themselves of the "Zionist presence" and all the handwringing over the plight of the Palestinians won't do them one bit of good if the Overlords see to it that it shouldn't and that it definitely will not.

(2,477 posts)Israel has an absolute right to defend itself against terror attacks, which is exactly what these rockets are, terror weapons fired by terrorists, they are fired indiscriminately at the civilian population to terrorize and kill.

(10,164 posts)There will be lots of pitch-black gallows humor among the fighters on both sides, too. These are normal human coping mechanisms to deal with the fear of death or maiming that accompanies going into such situations.
The situation in Gaza just sucks all around. After decades of back-and-forth, I really couldn't care less about blamecasting. People will die...for absolutely nothing.

(475 posts)that so many people on these boards are so against Israel defending itself from Hamas, which has been given a free pass by MANY left-wingers due to them fighting an ally of the United States, even though Hamas does things like conscript women and children, murder anyone who doesn't follow their version of extremist Sharia Law and bombard Israel with rockets on a daily basis.
That, and hiding their ammunition in civilian residences so that way they cry foul when the IDF destroys some.

(2,477 posts)My wife reads some of the comments here on DU about Israel and it infuriates her and makes her cry at the same time.
Some of the things said about Israel are fucking disgusting.
cali
(114,904 posts)I think the difference is that here on DU, the disgusting things said about Palestinians garner appropriate outrage, but that is not always true (in my long experience in I/P) of the disgusting things said about Israelis- or worse yet, about Jews. Last time that Israel invaded Gaza, something I thought was crazy wrong, there were a lot of tombstones for outright anti-semitism.
unreadierLizard
(475 posts)The current Israeli government isn't making the situation any easier, but...
Something that some people tend to forget is that it doesn't matter what kind of government Israel has - from Shimon Peres to Ariel Sharon to Ehud Barak - Hamas has ALWAYS been attacking Israel and will never stop until they are destroyed.
Just because Netanyahu(spelling probably off) is a few monks short of a choir doesn't mean that Israel has any less of a right to defend itself from total destruction.
glacierbay
(2,477 posts)but I make a difference between the Palestinian people and the Hamas terrorists.
I'll be willing to bet that the majority of Palestinians want peace, to be able to work, provide for their family, prosper, unfortunately, you have a minority that just wants to terrorize and kill and silence those that do want a just peace.
cali
(114,904 posts)that doesn't mean they don't want peace. People often hold seemingly contradictory viewpoints. But can you honestly blame Palestinians for the anger they feel at Israel? They're land is being stolen. Their water is being stolen. Gaza is an open air prison.
PCIntern
(25,576 posts)and take it...
I paraphrase Howard Stern when I state that if the Jews had been given the planet Mars rather than the desert known as Palestine, that shriveled little wisp of land which had gone completely to seed, within 50 years they'd have had Mars up and running at a profit, making great advances for civilization everywhere and everyone else would be there saying, "That's ours and we want it back!!"

(12,081 posts)It's easy for a well armed military to go into a poor community with little to no weapons and just slaughter the enemy. Why do you think we invaded Iraq? They were already crippled from the first Gulf War. Even Cheney wouldn't be stupid enough to go after say China who could actually kick our butts.
cali
(114,904 posts)and there's plenty of callousness and horror in ill-equipped forces from poor countries. It's baked in.
liberal_at_heart
(12,081 posts)You obviously support Isreal. That's fine. I do see fault on both sides but do tend to side with the Palestinians. We need the a third party to come in and tell both sides to quit acting like children and to sit down and negotiate. I think that if Isreal would stop leveling neighborhoods and building Isreali settlements then you could possibly get the civilians to stop supporting Hamas. It is Hamas who helps the people rebuild after Isreal has torn down their neighborhoods. You have to figure out why the civilians are supporting Hamas and address those issues. And both Isreal and Palestine will have to be willing to give up ground and build a two party state. A two party state has always and still is the only solution. The question is how do you get both sides to agree. Isreal has stated before that the stopping of building of settlements will not be part of the negotiations. That is a mistake in my opinion.
cali
(114,904 posts)and if you read my posts, you'd know that.
As I wrote upthread, the Israelis are stealing Palestinian land and water and Gaza is nothing but an open air prison. That sound like support to you?

(154,021 posts)soldiers have been behaving like this before combat like forever, serious.
Ok, there were no photos in Roman times, but you can bet your dying ass that the troopers of the Tenth legion joked and smiled as well... before they marched to Massada. Or the second Legion, before guarding the Hadrian Wall, (On and that one, from ostraca we know the life of the roman legionaire was just as boring and of complaints of the usual suspects, as any modern military)
There are no photos of Greece either, but I am willing to bet that soldiers at Marathon did something similar before combat.
Read some Shakespeare, he captured this well in prose that we all love to quote to this day... so did Herodotus by the way.
What we need is for people to realize that before combat troops around the world will behave in ways like this.
It is, I think, a way to avoid thinking that perhaps you are mortal... and for the 19 year old soldiers, and the 20 somethings junior officers, that is a hell of a reality check. Oh don't worry, those who are exposed to combat, regardless of national army, will have a few nightmares for the rest of their days... if they do not buy the farm... and in some cases will not be functional. That is the horror of war.
Oh and that has nothing to do with what national uniform you wear either.
Just check the photos I posted from other wars, going back to the Civil War.
