Hamas gunmen surged into Israel in a highly organized and meticulously planned operation that suggested a deep understanding of Israels weaknesses. Here is how the attacks unfolded.By Patrick Kingsley and Ronen Bergman
For a moment, the attackers appeared uncertain about where to go next. Then one of them pulled something from his pocket: a color-coded map of the complex.
Reoriented, they found an unlocked door to a fortified building. Once inside, they entered a room filled with computers the military intelligence hub. Under a bed in the room, they found two soldiers taking shelter. The gunmen shot both dead.
This sequence was captured on a camera mounted on the head of a gunman who was later killed. The New York Times reviewed the footage, then verified the events by interviewing Israeli officials and checking Israeli military video of the attack as well...
Footage from the attackers head-mounted cameras, including the video of the raid on the intelligence hub, showed Hamas gunmen from its highly trained Nukhba brigade smashing through the barricades of several bases in the first light of the morning.
After breaching, they were merciless, gunning down some soldiers in their beds and underwear. In several bases, they knew exactly where the communications servers were and destroyed them, according to a senior Israeli army officer.
With much of their communications and surveillance systems down, the Israelis often couldnt see the commandos coming. They found it harder to call for help and mount a response. In many cases, they were unable to protect themselves, let alone the surrounding civilian villages.

(36,132 posts)I just bookmarked it to use in the future. I've been stupid not to use it, thinking in the past that because I have a subscription, or can "gift" an articles, I wouldn't need it. Much appreciated.
Think. Again.
(8,367 posts)...if an article isn't already archived, you can archive it quick and then share it.
I'm assuming the media types will figure out how to close it down somehow sooner or later.

(8,367 posts)From the article:
"Hamas planning documents, videos of the assault and interviews with security officials show that the group had a surprisingly sophisticated understanding of how the Israeli military operated, where it stationed specific units, and even the time it would take for reinforcements to arrive.
The Israeli military says that, once the war is over, it will investigate how Hamas managed to breach its defenses so easily.
But whether the armed forces were careless with their secrets or infiltrated by spies, the revelations have already unnerved officials and analysts who have questioned how the Israeli military renowned for its intelligence gathering could have inadvertently revealed so much information about its own operations."
My question:
Is there any indication that this info was among the stuff that trump leaked to russia?
And if so, will the U.S. (as a nation) hold any international responsibility (war crimes?) for this?

(81,570 posts)Trump's disclosure endangered spy placed inside ISIS by Israel, officials say
By ABC News
May 16, 2017, 5:44 PM
The life of a spy placed by Israel inside ISIS is at risk tonight, according to current and former U.S. officials, after President Donald Trump reportedly disclosed classified information in a meeting with Russian officials last week.
The spy provided intelligence involving an active ISIS plot to bring down a passenger jet en route to the United States, with a bomb hidden in a laptop that U.S. officials believe can get through airport screening machines undetected. The information was reliable enough that the U.S. is considering a ban on laptops on all flights from Europe to the United States.
The sensitive intelligence was shared with the United States, officials say, on the condition that the source remain confidential.
The real risk is not just this source, said Matt Olsen, the former Director of the National Counterterrorism Center and an ABC News contributor, but future sources of information about plots against us.

(59,504 posts)It seems like someone would almost have had to be in the IDF or working for them. It also showed that the detailed map was dated last year.
Think. Again.
(8,367 posts)...I was afraid he might have directly involved the U.S. in responsibility for the original assault.

(59,504 posts)I suspect that even if they figure it out, they will not tell us because that would publicly disclose a vulnerability. Obviously, they would work hard to close it. It is stunning to me how much they knew. That detailed info, used as a basis for their plans, let them make the area adjacent to Gaza almost unprotected.
Think. Again.
(8,367 posts)...we won't find out much from what their investigations reveal.
If anything, it will just be considered valuable political info by them, that may come in handy for international leverage at some point.

(6,398 posts)It seems laughable, but, what if they gained the sophistication and it went unnoticed? If so, this is a whole new ball game.
I find it a bit telling that Hamas used electronic communication that Israel was actively monitoring to play down any word of an attack. Have to ask, how did they know?
Think. Again.
(8,367 posts)...keeping everything on digital devices and clouds is really just asking for it to be stolen.
It's like putting your social security number on a roadside billboard but covering it with a sheet and telling yourself it's safe.
But I'm still curious if the Isreali info that trump gave to russia contained any of the info used in the attack and whether that somehow makes the U.S. legally complicit in the attack.

(6,398 posts)They don't have much to gain by this other than a distraction and a chance to play peace maker since they have quiet and good relations with both Israel and Hamas.
With that said, if it was leaked, how do we know it wasn't to say Saudi Arabia? We know of some leaks he made, but not all of them. But I'm still leaning towards Hamas getting the sophistication as being Occom's Razor here. The right wing government of Israel didn't think or believe Hamas was capable of this. They had the Iron Dome and watched all the electronic communication.
Having a base map is probably shared between current and ex IDF members quite frequently, if nothing at all, to show them where the mess hall is. Here in the USA, we've had some fairly embarrassing intelligence breakdowns and that's the ones we know of.
Think. Again.
(8,367 posts)...that trump had access to, he gave it to them also.
But since we know that he gave Isreali info to the russians, I'm wondering if any of what he gave them was used in this particular attack.

I believe, though it could be fog of war lie, that they found a Russian among Hamas (just read a headline but have been too worn thin by the ugliness of it all to read the details -- so it could likelybe true since I find true Hamas won't allow themselves to be caught alive.
I'm over an ocean away, and realize that if I'm sickened by it all, I can't even imagine the incalculable horror and trauma of millions there. A truly bloody and deadly 'holy land.'
