Meghan McCain: If I dont see some changes in next 4 years, Im going to consider registering as an Independent.

Ive spent most of my adult life fighting for change from inside the Republican Party. We Republicans need to look at the future instead of living in the past. We have to learn from what the last two presidential elections have taught us. We must accept each other and the different opinions within the party instead of trying to cannibalize people that diverge from an arbitrary purity test. I refuse to let the extremists win. We cant let the Tea Party bully us any longer. We cant keep worrying about ultraconservative white male voters. At the end of the day, I still believe Im on the right side of history, and we cant let this party sink away. We can and we must evolve. I dont know exactly how yet, but I for one am ready to spend the next four years helping us get there.
And if we dont move forward, adapt, and become relevant again, the Republican Party isnt going to survive. It will just continue to alienate more moderate voters like myself. If I dont see some changes in the next four years, Im going to consider registering as an Independent in 2016.
Psst.... Wonder if she is talking about dear Old Dad too!

I saw that interview. And I believe yes, she was talking about dear old dad.

(18,775 posts)While I don't agree that she's "on the right side of history", I do appreciate that there are at least SOME Republicans who consider themselves Moderates and want to salvage their party.
Because as much as I'm a staunch Democrat I still don't want the Democratic party to become the ONLY party. I very much agreed with the way the Rachael Maddow put it: "Because in this country we have a two party system, in government. And the idea is supposed to be that the two sides both come up with ways to confront and fix the real problems facing our country. They both propose possible solutions to our real problems. And we debate between those possible solutions."
I think that's exactly right. Although I frankly wish we were MORE than just a two party system. And I wish we would move in a more Progressive direction.
I wouldn't mind having a civil debate with someone like Meghan McCain over her 'Moderate Republican' ideas.

(8,965 posts)The current mindset of the GOP would consider her to be a RINO. Politicians of her stripe are routinely "primaried" in order to maintain strict ideological purity amongst the ranks. She is no longer wanted within her own party. Not exactly wanted within the Democratic party either. So, Meghan meets all the basic criteria for an independent. She's drawn a "line in the sand" and the changes she advocates for the GOP are highly unlikely. Four years is a long time to wait for what should be an obvious decision, here and now.

(13,877 posts)from a Rural Red State who would give people the shirt off his back. I watched Kennedy go down as a teenager and my Dad was truly affected. Never talked much more about politics, although I'm sure he remained Republican. Just not the proud Republican as before. It was tough soul-searching. Moved to the West Coast and cast my first vote for George McGovern. After watching her, I suspect she'll do the same.

(4,869 posts)Or is she just famous for being the daughter of a failed presidential candidate? I see her on tv all the time talking about shit but I don't think she has any credentials.

(2,169 posts)They are still Republican and every one knows it including the Republican party. Lame assholes. It's a false protest. For those people there was only one candidate on the ballot November 6. Barack Obama. They were either voting for or against him. Period. The pundits and unemployed campaign staffers tout how many votes Romney got, he wasn't even a consideration on the ballot, fools.

(20,880 posts)The party uses people like her to appeal to young voters, but they don't have any interest in change. She'd do herself a favor and leave the party. It isn't like they don't take you back if you leave.
