The GOP Death Throes

I think most of us knew that after being handed a resounding loss last Tuesday, the GOP would double-down and become even more extreme in their hate-filled rhetoric and actions, instead of choosing to cooperate. But what we've witnessed in just a mere week after the election has really got me thinking, since I didn't expect it to begin so quickly nor so vehemently. They will not negotiate and will not go down with a wimper, but instead with a temper tantrum.

This is the last dying gasp, the thrashing and screaming of a party that has long outlived its usefulness, so blinded by selfish ideology that they can't comprehend they're digging their own grave.

So I've adopted a new attitude as I watch this magnificent display unfold. I refuse to let it affect me, other than to be entertained by it. I will continue to support President Obama and the hard work that needs to be done to move this country forward. All the while, watching as the other side goes further down the rabbit hole.

This new attitude is founded in a renewed optimism since Obama won re-election (and Dems made gains elsewhere), that there is still a majority of people in this country who want our leaders to work together to solve our problems, for the benefit of everyone.

The GOP, in its current incarnation, is destined to destroy itself by refusing to accept that they must change, or die.

Sucks to be them.

Romney way outpolled Goldwater, who suffered one of the worst defeats in the history of presidential elections. People wondered if the Republican Party would ever elect a President again. The GOP came back and won the very next election.

Looking to 2014, the GOP is defending only a few Senate seats, all of them safe. We have several vulnerable seats. The House will still be gerrymandered toward the Republicans, and our candidates won't have the benefit of Obama's coattails.

Historically, when a President is in the sixth year of his administration, the midterms tend to produce significant gains for the other party.

All this schadenfreude about the Republicans' anguish is good clean fun, and I've been indulging in it myself, but talk about the GOP's death is hyperbole, and runs the risk of encouraging complacency.

10. Yep. That's why I'll wait until the corpse is actually in the ground before proclaiming the GOP

"dead". What makes me pessimistic is the fact that just four years after the end one of the the worst presidencies in recorded history, so many people still opted to vote for the GOP in 2012.

Maybe the GOP really did die after 2008 and is now more like a zombie out of a George Romero flick: Undead, hungry for human flesh and simply going through the motions reflexively of what it did while still alive.

But the myth of "Post Partisanship" was tried by the WH and did an admirable job of reviving them and giving them new legitimacy.

I'm still curious if that was done by accident(stupidity) or by plan(evil).

9. You are forgetting something.

The Republican Party is a soulless, remorseless, criminal enterprise. They don't care who dies on either side.
Their only goal is for power and to win at any cost. They really though they had it in the bag this time. Now not only will there be bodies floating in the river (relative nobodies), but some (higher ups) will be supporting bridges and foundations, as light planes are getting a little too obvious. Bet on it.

The fact is that the country is highly polarized at close to the 50/50 level. They will fight an internal war. Romney was the latest, and likely the last, of the old-line establishment Republicans. Examples of them were Rockfeller, Nixon, Ford, Bush I, Dole, McCain, and Romney. Their next nominee will be a genuine conservative with good debating skills. And after eight years of a liberal president the pendulum will be swinging back to conservatism again.
