The Stay Home for Thanksgiving Movement

Thanksgiving has its roots in historic myth. However, I do think it's one of my favorite holidays because it doesn't involve the purchase of anything much but food - and gas to get to the food if you're traveling to the feast.

I think it's beneficial and appropriate for the nation to choose a day to be thankful, a day to gather with loved ones for a shared meal, whatever that means to you.

I also realize that even if it's Thanksgiving some people must be on the job. I worked a few Thanksgivings in healthcare; I have to get gas traveling to see the folks so I'd like to know the gas stations are open on the holiday; I sure hope cops and firefighters and nurses and air traffic controllers don't all take the day off.

But I do think it sucks that large chain stores are opening on Thanksgiving to sell shite. I would not shop retail on this day, because I think non-necessary businesses should do their employees the favor of letting them have the day off to be with their families.

It's my opinion and it won't change. You are free to disagree.

If you agree with me, there are folks who have started a little movement to encourage people to stay home ( from shopping ) on Thanksgiving. Here's one website devoted to the cause:

Hope all Duers have a pleasant holiday season. Let the War On Christmas Begin!

to be the first to take your dollahz!

They're trying to cut out the small competition - who will close for the day and treat their employees like human beings.

Let those who really need the bargains have at them on Black Friday, but for FSM's sake, let the retail worker have a day of rest with the family before the crush starts the next day!

cleaning up the dinner mess, serving dessert, cleaning up that mess, taking a nap, getting up and eating some more, the last thing I wanna do is go shopping. It is my blob day and I hold it dear.

I do have to drive some that day, but when the clan gets together we are playing guitars and singing, watching movies or football together, telling jokes, catching up, eating like kings and queens and enjoying each other's company.

Shopping is the last thing I would trade for that.

I don't know WTF is wrong with people.

However, of note, retailers are opening earlier so they can snag consumers before they've spent all their holiday cash.

MINE! MINE! MINE! says the greedy retailer.

It should be a paid holiday and every worker in a non-essential capacity should have the day to enjoy with friends and family.

We need more days off in this nation, anyway, but FFS at least we never went on shopping frenzies on Thanksgiving in the past.

...which speaks to a whole other societal problem: waking up the morning after being thankful for what you have to trample people on the way to getting more stuff.

However, the Stay Home on Thanksgiving Movement doesn't appear to have a quarrel with Black Friday.

They just want to encourage folks not to shop retail on Thanksgiving itself.

I have happily signed on to this facebook event. Some might think it's silly, but it's a very visible way to make a statement that this is not a direction we want our holidays to go. People can wait to go Christmas shopping for a couple of days.

Some retailers are opening on Thanksgiving at 9:00 pm. Walmart (of course), Toys R Us, Sears, and Target.

I won't be out there shopping. I hate crowds. They are made up of people.

My family are a bunch of bible-thumping hypocrites so I don't want to see them, much less eat with them...not that they would invite my mother and I. My mom doesn't thump too hard so I will have to cook something for her. I really don't like Thanksgiving anymore. It feels so obligatory. I'm grateful all the time...I do not like being told to be thankful on this particular day.

I need to find a new family.

Actually I just heard that our local hospital has a great Thanksgiving meal and the public can come. They have great food...better than all the restaurants around here...and so so so cheap! That sounds like my kind of Thanksgiving. No cooking, no dishes.....like the typical man in my family has gotten his entire stinking life.

west of home to have Thanksgiving with Family. We'll cook, hang out, play games and have a good time together. Family will come to my mother-on-law's home and some will stay a few days, others will be there for the day. It's been a long time since we were all together in one place. It will be nice and a reminder of the way it used to be.

However, I think you're fighting a trend that began some years ago when the retailers realized they could get a large portion of the population out in mass to shop for "bargains". Many of the these people are "trained" well and actually plan those outings like a general planning an invasion in a foreign land. They go with lengthy lists, Apps on their phones and a band of other shoppers so they hit the stores armed to the teeth. Their route through stores is planned, their next move is already plotted and built in breaks for snacks and a meal are part of the schedule. Actually, these people are kind of scary with a gleam in their eye and an agenda they will follow. They ACTUALLY like shopping on Black Friday and look forward to it.

Not me. You couldn't pay me to go out on Black Friday. But for the folks who go for this marketing plan, they would not miss it.

I'll be with my family on Thursday and Friday, as well. I won't be within 20 miles of a mall or a Big Box Store. And that's just fine with me.
