WASHINGTON—House Republicans turned aside an effort by a group of conservative lawmakers to elevate their favored candidate to a top leadership position, choosing instead a female lawmaker who some in the party thought could help close the gap with women voters.


The selection of Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington state comes after last week's presidential and Senate elections showed the party faces a challenge in reaching women. Ms. McMorris Rodgers defeated Rep. Tom Price of Georgia to become chairwoman of the House Republican Conference, a post that helps shape the GOP's public image and is considered the fourth most senior slot in the House leadership.

The election was seen as an early sign of what tone and signals GOP lawmakers would adopt in the aftermath of the party's election losses last week.

Mr. Price, 58 years old, is a former chairman of the Republican Study Committee, a group of conservative lawmakers that often pushed House Speaker John Boehner to the political right on fiscal matters. Speaking on Mr. Price's behalf Wednesday before the closed-door vote of House Republicans was Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the party's vice-presidential nominee.
