Wow. Bob Dole's 1996 campaign website is still up

http://www.dolekemp96.org/main.htm

From The Civil rights section on his issues page: Bob dole Proudly announces that he:

Supported the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Voted for the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) of 1967. The act protects older employees and job applicants from age discrimination in employment.

In 1990, Senator Dole supported the expansion and clarification of the ADEA to protect older workers from the loss of their employee benefit plans due to age discrimination.

Played an instrumental role in extending the Voting Rights Act in 1982.

Led the battle to pass the Americans with Disabilities Act, which is the first comprehensive federal law which protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination in employment, public services, transportation and telecommunications.

He would never make it in the Teabagger-dominated GOP of 2012. Not even as a State legislature candidate.

That said, this site is much more appealing to the eye then Freeperland could ever be.

Wasn't any real chance of him winning, seemed like a nice thing they did for him, letting him do something.

Bob Dole and Jack Kemp are also committed to:

Increasing funding for student loans so that all Americans have the opportunity to go to college.
Protecting the federal interest subsidy and 6-month grace period for students and parents.
Keeping interest rates low for parents who take out loans for their children.
Increasing the maximum Pell grant award for the most needy students.

From his Environment section:

Bob Dole has always understood the key role that the federal government plays in protecting the environment. Bob Dole is the only Presidential candidate ever to have voted for and help pass every major piece of environmental protection legislation in the past 25 years. He:

Co-sponsored the Safe Drinking Water Act, which ensures healthy drinking water for all Americans.
Played a key role in passing the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act.
Led the Clean Air Act to passage, a law that fundamentally reformed the previous law and is recognized as one of the most sweeping environmental laws ever enacted.
Played a significant role in amending the Federal Water Pollution Control Act in 1971 to help eliminate the discharge of pollutants into navigable waters and to ensure the integrity of the nation's water supply by uniting federal and state efforts.
Introduced the Private Property Rights Act to ensure that the government justly compensates property owners for the "takings" of private property for public use.
Has long supported funding to preserve our natural resources including the Presidio, the Florida Everglades and America's National Parks.
Served as a key architect of the 1996 Farm Bill which contains one of the most significant conservation provisions ever enacted. This provision, introduced by Dole, maintains the Conservation Reserve Program, curbs water pollution through the Environmental Quality Incentive Program and provides the restoration of wetlands by increasing the Wetlands Reserve Program. At Senator Dole's insistence, the bill also provides $300 million for the restoration of the Florida Everglades.

Nobody doubted in 1996 that Bob Dole was a conservative. His running mate Jack Kemp was the economic "brains" of the Reagan administration.

And yet on his own website, here is what this long time conservative, former VP running mate (Ford 1976), and current Presidential nominee said about health care.

Bob Dole Favors Common Sense, Free Market Health-Care Reforms
Losing health insurance coverage or facing obstacles to obtaining such coverage is a real concern for many Americans. We need insurance reform -- but the answer is not a federal government takeover of the health care industry. Bob Dole supports consumer choice, open enrollment and portability of medical insurance.

In 1994, Dole introduced a health care reform bill which had no price controls, no mandates and no taxes. The bill took on a common sense, free market approach to health-care reform, focusing primarily on insurance reform, while offering subsidies to help low-income Americans buy health insurance.

As President, he will:

Seek ways to make health care more accessible and affordable for all Americans.
Ensure that individuals who change jobs do not lose their coverage or face pre-existing condition limitations.
Give self-employed individuals the same tax deductions that large corporations have to buy health insurance.
Make Medical Savings Accounts a real option available to all Americans.
Support efforts to make community and home based care more readily available.

Bob Dole Will Propose Innovative Solutions to Address Long-Term Care Needs
Bob Dole believes that access and funding for long-term care is as serious a problem as any before us. As President, Bob Dole will:
Propose a tax deduction for families who care for their elderly parents or family members.
Encourage the development of private long-term care insurance and provide government help for those wishing to purchase the coverage but unable to afford it.
Expand the options for long-term care beyond institutional care to include home, hospice and community-based care alternatives.
Support efforts to ensure the quality of nursing home care and to adequately protect against spousal impoverishment.

Bob Dole was the bench mark for conservative politics for an entire generation. And these were some of the ideas on his own campaign website. Could you imagine trying to defend some of these positions in a GOP primary today?

If you look at his issue page on drugs. Dole was pushing drug testing for Welfare beneficiaries before Rick Scott made it cool.
