Ohio 'Heartbeat Bill' Is Revived In State Legislature

Just two days after a majority of Ohio voters indicated at the polls that they support abortion rights, the GOP-controlled Ohio state legislature announced plans to reconsider a controversial bill that would ban all abortions after the fetal heartbeat is detected, without exceptions for rape, incest or life of the mother.

The so-called "heartbeat bill," which could prevent a woman from having an abortion before she even realizes she's pregnant, has been stalled in the Ohio state Senate since June 2011 largely because a major anti-abortion group refused to support it. Mike Gonidakis, executive director of Ohio Right to Life, told the Columbus Dispatch in March of 2011 that the bill was so extreme that it could backfire and prompt the Supreme Court to reaffirm Roe v. Wade.

Republican state legislative leaders will renew efforts to strip family-planning money from Planned Parenthood, restarting hearings next week on a bill to redirect tax dollars to community health clinics.

House Health and Aging Committee Chairman Lynn Wachtmann, R-Napoleon, scheduled a possible vote to recommend passage of House Bill 298 for Wednesday during the General Assembly’s lame-duck session.

Backed by Ohio Right to Life and other anti-abortion advocates, the bill stalled last spring over concern that it also would divert funding from hospitals, which was not the intent of supporters. The legislation would create a priority system for awarding federal family-planning funds, putting Planned Parenthood at the bottom of the list and likely cutting off about $1.7 million it uses for birth control and preventative care.

I've already written my state reps. If you live in Ohio, I beg you to please do the same. Please.

Gov. Kasich has said he will sign the heartbeat bill in to law if it passes. If he does this, I guess I will have to chain myself to something at the Ohio statehouse in protest. I am not kidding either.
