I'm a little surprised that you guys are letting the media play you like this.
Nobody's going to secede.
No way no how.
I don't care if some goofball starts a petition to secede and 100,000 people sign it. It means nothing. They might as well be liking it on Facebook.
I thought most of it was just for the "Look at these dumbfucks" factor but I've noticed some threads over the past couple of days where people were asking (apparently) serious questions about a world where one or more states seceded.
I'm really puzzled by that and the sheer number of these threads. It is simply not going to happen at all.
The focus on the concept seems inordinately high for something that has no chance in hell of happening. Even remotely.

(546 posts)... will I need a passport to visit Nebraska?
... will Nebraska be eligible for foreign aide?
... will they have 120-volt, 60-cycle electricity?
... maybe they will develop an exotic, foreign culture or a strange language we don't understand?
... Can the Rams belong to the National Football League?
... Will their currency be a artful? Easy to counterfeit?
... If I was born in pre-secessionist Nebraska, can I have dual citizenship?
One thing is certain:
They will legalize gambling.

(23,864 posts)The most amusing thing, and maybe a little worrying too, is how it mirrors some of the questions I've seen asked with a straight face on here in the last 48-72 hours.
Of course, the answer to most of those questions is moot: As soon as any state secedes from the union a sort of "Pangea Effect" will take place and all the flora and fauna will immediately evolve into wilder, primitive, stranger versions their pre-secession cousins.
They may legalize gambling but the casinos would become overrun with 9 foot-at-the-shoulder Irish Elk, munching on the carpet and inadvertently lifting suspender-snagged pit bosses off the ground as they raise their head in surprise when someone hits a jackpot.
Not that there's anything wrong with carpet munching, mind you.

It's hot air. Just a form of protesting. It doesn't mean anything, except that a bunch of teabaggers are being teabaggers

(10,611 posts)as I posted in another thread, I would be amused to see the petitioners have the reality of secession explained slowly and carefully to them.
Poll_Blind
(23,864 posts)...actually come of it that puzzle me. It's like reading stories about teabaggers preparing to be rounded up and placed in internment camps, only to see threads popping up from DUers asking if the government will provide their boots and bayonette for guard duty, or if they'll have to purchase them out of pocket.

(23,864 posts)Although, AFAIK, I don't think you came out and said it. But not all of them look like they're fishing for ammo. Honestly, why one would even want to debate these folks is beyond me. Here's a random example I just pulled from the GD stack. It's like people think there is actually something Going On.
That's the kind of thing that's...well, strange.

I mean, we have our conservative nutcases. But they generally live in fear of expressing their insanity within city limits.

(45,120 posts)bunch of cop cars block off the road and arrest a neighbor and confiscate his cache of illegal automatic weapons. On weekends it would sound like a war zone around here. It sure has gotten nice and peaceful since then. Of course the nut still live there with his romney sign next to his faded , tattered ron paul sign.

But thanks for the condescension.
P.S. What gets focused on by people on a web forum on a Tuesday night rilly rilly rilly isn't that big of a deal. Certainly not worth a scolding.

Thank you for the thread. Lemme repeat: We are not seceding! I am an AMERICAN and so are all of us Texans, GOOD OR BAD.

(3,297 posts)I'm pretty sure the majority of us are well aware that nobody's going to "secdee". This crap floats to the top every time a Democrat is in office, especially here in Texas (maybe less so when Bill Clinton was in office because the economy was rockin'.). I remember when Jimmy Carter was President, those damned "SECEDE!" bumperstickers were everywhere.
But still, it's fun to beat 'em over the head with the reality of their little quest. Especially now that their sensitivity to reality has hit a high point. And the fantasy of them building a boat, or a raft, or hell, even a rocket and getting the hell out is irresistible.

(22,336 posts)to remember our former Governor? I might be able to find 23,000 people to sign a petition. Surely that should be enough to get what I want. Who cares what the other millions of people in Michigan want. I'd have a petition!

(634 posts)The focus is due to the reason : Why?
its not taxes, abortion or guns or gays.
It is racism.
they don't wanna live in an America where the president is a " Kenyan " understanding that, in this case, kenyan starts with an "N"
this is a petition for racists.

Gotta call my music pals in Austin and tell em to start packing.
We got room for them in Cali!

(12,682 posts)like to play the game of "Gawd's Chosen" and think since everyone they associate with believes the same way they do, they're right. And the local politicians and power brokers that prey on them love to stir up the crazy - especially since there's so much money to be made playing the state against the feds, that wouldn't happen if the state was its own sovereign country.
They are fools to think that if they secede, they will have the same quality of life they have now - no matter how shitty their lives are now, it would be far worse with the petty faction leaders that will be struggling for control over the power vacuum once "federal oversight" is gone and the preachers and business leaders struggle to build their personal theocratic, free-market (and caucasian) paradise. Do the people signing these petitions seriously think they will be more respected by those taking power if their state "leaves" if they don't have the money or other assets to buy their way into power?

(10,597 posts)... but hey, I say let them have their little dreams. Gives them something to do, making their silly misspelled posters and uploading them to the internet. Rather than giving their antics any attention, we need to have our eyes and minds zeroed in on what's happening up in DC.
Calling the WH. Writing LTEs. Calling our Reps and Sens. I'm rooting for no deals, going over the cliff finally and twilighting GWs tax deal in toto. Then after the first of the year, pass a bill to lower the taxes for everyone making $250,000 or less a year.
