Cantor’s office won’t say to whom he spoke at the FBI

The Eric Cantor Angle on Petraeus-Broadwell Affair

Here’s how House Majority Leader Eric Cantor became aware of the David Petraeus matter, according to a senior aide to Cantor.

On Saturday, Oct. 27, Cantor spoke by phone to an FBI employee who told him about an investigation, including the details about Petraeus’ affair, and said he was concerned that classified information had been compromised

Cantor then asked his chief of staff, Steve Stombres, to inform FBI Director Robert Mueller. Because the federal government was closed Monday and Tuesday of that week because to Hurricane Sandy, Stombres did not connect with Mueller’s chief of staff until Wednesday, Oct. 31. Mueller took the information, but gave no indication whether there was an investigation, according to the aide.

The senior aide also said Cantor did not inform anyone else

Why didn't Cantor inform the Commander In Chief of this right away? Seems like sensible thing to do.

Oh, but being the nation's watchdog, I'm sure Issa will be holding meetings to find out. BlueCaliDem Nov 2012 #1

Cantor included being questioned by the FBI since he also with held information? Maybe Fienstein need to question him why he didn't inform them. I would not exonerate Cantor if I were people trying to. I think Cantor, Chaffetz and Issa might all be in the loop. He seems to have all these contacts in our most important agencies that are roques. Chaffetz is also the guy that took a trip to Libya without Democratic members being involved. General Allen's conduct needs to be analyzed. This is getting interesting to me.

Anyone who needed to know except his chief of staff?

If I were Obama, I'd be pretty incensed.

Rumors are that he held the information because he thought it could be used to damage Obama in the election.
While that's not confirmed at minimum he could have endangered the country due to negligence.

There had better be repercussions for him.

At that point he definitely should have informed Obama since it was a clear national security issue.
