A RW relative of mine posted this on facebook:
"So I was told today (by a reliable source that spoke with a CEO of a hospital) that with this new Obamacare coming into play, nursing cuts are about to take place. At least 30 within this one hospital will come January 1st. Can they start with the stupid ones that voted for him? I think that would be a good place to start! It's so discouraging to know that all this misery I've gone through with school could be absolutely pointless!! Obamacare SUCKS!!"
To which I posted a question:
"What is the nurses union doing about this?"
Her reply:
Unions suck! I wouldn't work anywhere where I had to join a union.
My reply:
Well then you reap what you sow. United we bargain, divided we beg.

(49,036 posts)Some companies' CEOs were thinking of layoffs due to lack of business. Along comes the election and they threaten layoffs if the vote goes against Romney, which it does. So they announce the layoffs they were already thinking of. In the meantime, their competitors operating under the same rules see no need to make layoffs because they are doing a better job managing their businesses.
However, the right wing think tanks decide they can manufacture a meme around this. So they plant numerous blog posts and people start compiling lists. Pretty soon any layoff gets onto the list, whether or not it has been verified. Next year, some journalists will do a proper check on the list and discover that most of it is bogus. Their report, filed in a reputable new organization, will get a small mention and be forgotten. The right wing and the Ts will trumpet their bogus lists for years.

Try to tell them it will increase demand and thus require an increase in supply and they just don't get it. To them, employees are an expense. Even the employees themselves have bought that crap that they are just a drain on profit. It's like they want to apologize to the CEO in a mansion for needing money to live.

(904 posts)A friend of mine works in healthcare. Back in 2008, the upper management of her medical group was telling everyone that thanks to the poor economy no one would be getting any more cost of living raises. They have been using this excuse to defer all raises ever since. At the first of this year, after talking with a few doctors she found out her medical group is doing better than it ever has; making money hand over fist...
After lots of gossip and some people giving up and quitting, about three months ago everyone got word there would be cost of living raises this year.
So, having worked at this place for over 10 years now, she just now got her first cost of living raise in 6 years! Now she tells me there are grumblings about Obamacare and how it's going hurt business....
As long as management holds all the power and there is no transparency: workers have no good reason to trust anything their employers say.
*I understand they say people in white collar jobs don't need unions because they can always take their skills elsewhere, but who wants to work someplace where your only recourse is to threaten to quit? Wouldn't some fairness and transparency be nice so employees can make informed decisions. Decisions every bit as informed as those by scheming money grubbing upper management?
**My thoughts on anti-union people: workers who like "right to work" are dupes.

(20,819 posts)vacation and/or sick days, etc., etc. Then ask her if she knows just how many people had to DIE during the labor movement just to give her that and to get the majority of workers to the point where they weren't worked 12 hours a day seven days a week with little pay and fewer breaks. Then ask her if she knows that child labor was legal until the thirties in too many states and that kids as young as five were forced to work in factories instead of going to school and enjoying, you know, just being a kid. Then ask her if she knows that those horrible unions were instrumental in fighting for and implementing laws against that. I could go on and on, but you get the picture.
People who reap the benefits of what unions gave who then buy into the corporate bullshit against them really, really, really piss me off. Just as much as people who belong to a profession with a union (such as teaching) but who bash unions and don't want to pay any dues or be a part of it. Okay, asshole, then you don't get any benefits from collective bargaining, either, you're totally on your own.

(345 posts)My father was a local union rep for 20 years. I remember being a kid and seeing my dad (a maintenance worker) get in his suit and tie to go to the negotiating table. I remember my parents talking about the negotiations and how pained my dad was to tell the guys he worked with bad news. I also remember how happy he was when they won some concessions and avoided the walkout/strike. The company he worked for built computer parts (outer cases) for IBM in the early 80s. IBM would not let that plant shut down for an hour, so management had to give in.

(53,661 posts)People put on 'airs,' so to speak, think that their bosses respect them for refusing to be unionized. It's illogical and cowardly on the part of the worker. They think they'll escape the hassle that those who work to organize get, that the boss has their back.
Anti-union people are willing to take the benefits that union members have fought for, taken blows for and even been killed. There's a risk to standing up to the boss, that they refuse to take.
Then act like they got it all on their own talent. I can't stand people like that. Good for you!
