Multiple petitions have been started for states to leave the Union. (https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petitions). Texas has about 50K petitions currently. (https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/peacefully-grant-state-texas-withdraw-united-states-america-and-create-its-own-new-government/BmdWCP8B )
I wrote a petition that reaffirms some basic American beliefs in Democracy and the rule of law. I need 150 signatures to have it viewable on the White House's website. I would ask that you follow the link below and help me get these signatures. Thank you.

(2,384 posts)I had a misspelling in the first petition. I posted another one really quick. I don't think anyone signed yet, but if you did please sign this one again.

(1 post)Funny how the same people who swear they're patriots, cloak themselves in the American flag and scream ''USA USA USA'' at any criticism are the same ones who want to secede. Which is literally THE most un-American thing you can do.
(On a side note, it's friggin' awesome when these guys get upset and threaten to move to Canada. A country that has gay marriage, a form of universal healthcare, gun control etc. - pretty much everything they hate...)

(2,384 posts)and funny. However, it still should be condemned by all

(17,651 posts)if you're going to do this, might as well do it right and take some of the advice of your fellow DUers.
Those that signed will come back and re-sign - just correct it/make your changes now.

Btw, I'm #3.

(2,384 posts)But I like the wording. It re-enforces that secession is treason by the use of the pledge of allegiance.
Plus I have posted the link at various other places on the web.
I did try to get consensus on wording on another thread. But if I knew that this would be an objection to signing it, I would have reworded or thought of using something else besides the pledge of allegiance.

(9,314 posts)stupidity. Nothing will ever come of it .....it's just a bunch of silly yahoos that the President doesn't need to acknowledge.
He'd have gone crazy if he had addressed ever action of stupidity by the redneck crowd.

(21,786 posts)that people would stop bandying about the completely stupid phrase "un-American". The whole idea that "Americanism" involves adhering to whatever set of beliefs and values the speaker happens to be in favour of, and that there's some quasi-religious moral aspect to "Americanism", is frankly really fucking creepy nationalism of a sort that no other country really engages in. I don't think you can call the idea of secession "un-American", anyway; what was that whole war of independence about again? Oh right...seceding from Britain. And you know, if a majority of the population in any state vote to secede from the Union? Let them go; that's democracy (and also self-determination, which is a recognised right under international law). If you think that the people of a state that's voted to secede should be compelled by force of arms to remain in the Union then you don't actually believe in democracy, sorry. Not that a majority of Texans, or Louisianans, or South Carolinians, or whoever, would vote to secede anyway; these petitions are pissed-off racists who can't believe Obama got re-elected having a massive and public tantrum about it, and don't really deserve any notice.

(2,384 posts)If you get to leave because you lost an election. It becomes an unworkable system.

(24,772 posts)The South seceded in the 19th century and then proceded to provoke the Civil War. If they did it then, they may well attack the US now. They won't rest until we're destroyed--and they call US the enemy?!

(333 posts)happen to be the same ones who are the quickest to want to secede. They don't consider anybody other than fellow wingnuts to be patriots, which is why they were so quiet when Shrub was president and now they're raising Hell while Obama is in the WH.
