Terry McAuliffe announced Thursday that he plans to run for Virginia governor in 2013.
In an email to supporters, the former Democratic National Committee chair and longtime adviser to Bill Clinton said he would seek the nomination next year. McAuliffe ran an unsuccessful bid for the office in 2009, when he lost the Democratic nomination to state Sen. Creigh Deeds. Deeds was later defeated by Republican Bob McDonnell.
"Over the past four years, Ive traveled to every corner of Virginia for over 2,400 meetings and events," McAuliffe's email reads. "It is absolutely clear to me that Virginians want their next Governor to focus on job creation and common sense fiscal responsibility instead of divisive partisan issues. If we want Virginia to be the best place for business, we need leaders who prioritize economic growth and move beyond the political issues that are designed to divide us." ..................(more)

i'd love it if we could get a non-establishment candidate to run, but if no one bothers to show up at the polls...

(1,231 posts)Couple of lessons learned in the Commonwealth in 2009, including no more 3-way primaries. It was ugly. Another is that VA Rs are very, very organized on the state and local level. See the make-up of the VA Assembly. I worked on that 2009 campaign and I never want to experience such a thing again. I can handle losing, Lord knows we have experienced a lot of that in VA, but that Deeds campaign was a nightmare.
In 2013 we will probably face Ken Cuccinelli as the R candidate, and not Bob Bolling. Cuccinelli used to be my state senator. Creepy, Right-wing and very, very smart. There are very few Dems that have the name recognition, fund-raising abilities and sheer balls to take Ken head-on. Plus, don't underestimate TM. The guy is really sharp.
And in fairness, he has been all over the state in the last few years, really laying a lot of groundwork. A lot of establishment types will pooh-pooh another run by him, but considering Mark Warner is not really going to resign his senior senate seat to run again, as some rumored over the last few months, I have to say, I don't see anyone else who is ready to pick up the baton and run with it for the Gov race in 2013.
We have a lot of good up and coming Dems in VA. But i can't think of any that can have the $$ and infrastructure to go head to head with Cuccinelli 12 months. I just don't know who that would be.
I also doubt Terry would do this again if he hadn't gotten the "all clear" by most prominent VA Dems. He's a party guy, through and through.
But, we'll see.
