The map we're used to seeing exaggerates the size of the Republican vote, since there are a lot of red states that are large in area but small in population. In this cartogram, where 1 square = 1 electoral vote, Obama's mandate becomes easier to see.

(2,035 posts)The Catholic Church is much more prominent in the Midwestern states than I thought.
Of course, seeing its dominance in parts close to the Mexican border and southern Florida is no surprise, the overwhelming latino presence there makes it a given.

(15,262 posts)Of course, leading church might be a smallish fraction of the people when there are many varieties of delusion abounding.

(6,119 posts)I know the NC county religious map fairly well and it does not match the religion one for NC. This looks like it is based on old, sel-reported membership counts from the 90's that exaggerated the Baptists. NC is much more varied. Missing millions of Methodists, etc.

(357 posts)I like this map, but it's still misleading.
...we need a map that:
1) adjusts to population (as this does)
AND
2) Instead of Blue or red, uses shades of purple

(13,418 posts)finally someone makes a picture of the fact that NO ONE LIVES IN ND, SD, MT, ID, WY, etc.
I'm quite sure that deer and/or cattle out number people in those states.
Great Post!

(4,835 posts)The importance of the gun control issue can't be understated. The red-staters are convinced that the government is going to take their guns away.
The democrats don't fight hard enough in those states to overcome that belief.

(23,364 posts)Michigan's firearm season starts in two days.
And there will be some Democrats among the hunters.
Blanks
(4,835 posts)I'm sure there's hunting all over the 'blue' west coast.
Politics is a majority rules game (particularly with electoral votes). I'm merely suggesting that in the red states there is a higher concentration of hunters because there is more wide open spaces. Among those voters; there are single issue voters. That single issue is gun control.
I don't feel like gun control is addressed adequately to hunters in the red states.
femrap
(13,418 posts)staters should spend some time in Chicago or other large city and see how guns are used there. And visa versa.
But I just don't understand why anyone would need an AK47. For hunting?
I've fantasized about all the elk, moose, deer, bears, antelope, wolves, bobcats, etc. would gather together and stampede the hunters dressed in orange. Show them who is boss.
I mean, look at the over population of humans!
I grew up on a farm w/ my grandparents. They did not hunt...no guns at all. Just raised beef cattle, dairy, corn and soybeans. Grandpa didn't even kill groundhogs...now my uncles and cousins think it's great fun and required. I don't know what has happened. These dudes get together and all they talk about is guns. It's surreal. I really have no respect for them and spend as little time around them as possible.
I've asked my mother....are you sure I'm not adopted? LOL. The family is all bible-thumping repugnants.
hack89
(39,171 posts)most states limit magazine to 5 rounds. AK clones do not not fire particularly powerful round so in some states they cannot be used to hunt larger game like elk but they make perfect deer rifles at moderate range (300 yards). But they are cheap, compact and rugged - just what you need for hunting.
femrap
(13,418 posts)hearing about the various and stupid mistakes deer hunters make...shooting their foot or a fellow hunter. But human population is high so I guess it keeps our world balanced.
I prefer hunting rapists and seahawks.
buh-bye.

(39,171 posts)In ND the red voters elected a woman Dem who hunts like everyone else. There is no "The red-staters" out there. There are myriad voters of all shades and stripes and no such monolith exists.
To win elections, you have to understand the complexity, not lump everyone into some single block.
Blanks
(4,835 posts)If you've got a democrat running for office; he's gonna have an ad with him carrying a hunting rifle.
To win elections you have to have a majority. Part of getting a majority is understanding your voters. If you have a large population of hunters; you claim one candidate is gonna take their guns. If the candidate (or party) that they are accusing doesn't respond; they will lose the hunters.
That's what I see going on; granted it is my own perception. Democrats very often win in built-up areas even in red states. Certainly guns aren't the only issue, but it is one of them. I think it's a big one.
I'm not claiming a 'monolith'; I'm saying that very often when we lose in big hunting states we've let the 'hunting vote' slide.
I'll bet this woman hunter in ND made it clear that she's a hunter; just like the Arkansas democrats did that have won in the past.

(11 posts)LOVE this electoral college map. And there may only be seven progressive democrats in Wyoming, but we are living here in the belly of the beast doing our best to give it heartburn. With idiot senators like John Barrasso and clueless representatives like Cynthia Lummis, it isn't easy. We had our Obama/Biden signs stolen twice but that is progress! Last time our house was egged twice. Progress!

(13,418 posts)I've driven through Wyoming a couple of times. I liked it. Very few people which was nice...but I guess most of them are not the ones I want to know.
In 2004, some one drove through the yard to knock down our Kerry signs...ended up hitting a phone pole. What idiots! This year....no one touched a thing!
Hey, welcome to DU!

BRAVO for posting this. Thanks.

(7,403 posts)Because of the Senate imbalance to the map. Every State gets 2 squares for the Senate, whether California or Montana. If this was done on the basis of the House only the red area would be even smaller with the blue area increasing by a like amount. The State split was Obama 26, Romney 24 so House only in the EC was Obama 280, Romney 158.
