I am serious. Why should I care about this Petraeus debacle? I know there are a lot of posts on this subject but can't make myself read them.

(98 posts)Is it really a scandal if the guy had an affair and stepped down? I don't care...but maybe I'm missing something

(35,701 posts)You may not find that disturbing but I do. This guy is the CIA chief and he is having an affair with someone who doesn't know when to keep her mouth shut. She also sent a threatening email to a potential rival for the general's affections - so threatening the target of the email freaked out and went to the FBI. Major security issues here all around. A general heading the CIA should have better judgment.

(7,290 posts)I agree with you.
I find the conspiracy theories much more interesting than the actual scandal itself.

(58,704 posts)WRT the Benghazi affair.
That's starting to look like a huge CIA clusterfuck, and Petraeus was in the middle of it.
Stepping down for an affair is easier than being fired for incompetence.

(6,785 posts)From Wikipedia:
On September 20, the Senate passed an amendment by Republican John Cornyn III of Texas designed to "strongly condemn personal attacks on the honor and integrity of General Petraeus". Cornyn drafted the amendment in response to a controversial full-page ad by the liberal group Moveon.org in the September 10, 2007, edition of The New York Times. All forty-nine Republican Senators and twenty-two Democratic Senators voted in support.[115] The House passed a similar resolution by a 341-79 vote on September 26.

(28,944 posts)Sit back and watch a Belt Way knife fight. Apparently, a whistle blower put that snake Cantor on to this and Cantor being Cantor saw a way to embarrass POTUS. Plus, it's an Oooo shiny (sex sells) for the MSM and takes attention away from the election.

Sometimes, there really isn't a conspiracy.

(37,573 posts)but I thought this quote was interesting "...the characteristic flaw of the ignorant, which is to deny that becoming educated is worth the effort." Donald McCloskey in the foreward to "Reaching for Heaven on Earth: the theological meaning of economics" Robert H. Nelson 1991

(36,132 posts)An ongoing restructuring to streamline and combine both CIA and military roles is beginning, and this pre-empts Republican PR attempts to create drama over it all.

(4,276 posts)it's all probably tied up with Benghazi and who knew what when....and Petraeus is right in the middle of that it looks like.
Sort of like when you give a mouse a cookie thing. Maybe I've misconstrued the whole thing. My mind is mush now after the election. Sorry.

People who should have been made aware of the problem at the CIA were not made aware and the people who should not be involved were indeed involved.
