Toronto Star: Stephen Harper’s Conservatives mimic Mitt Romney’s Republicans

Most Canadians wanted Barack Obama to win. How about Stephen Harper? He didn’t let on, appropriately so. A prime minister has to work with whoever occupies the White House.

But there’s little doubt that Harper’s ideology and outlook are about the same as Mitt Romney’s.

Why does that matter, now that Romney isn’t going to be president? It does because what Americans have rejected, Canadians are stuck with at least until the next election.

Americans did so with 51 per cent of the votes cast. Canadians did it with 60 per cent in the last election, Harper having formed the government with 40 per cent. That’s our parliamentary democracy. Still, it’s useful to remind ourselves of his policies that are not in sync with majority Canadian opinion but mesh with those of Romney and the Republicans. ............(more)
