You have no idea how much I missed DU for the last twelve days!!! Called Ohio from a phone back for four days, including election day, but was cut off from the world. So I know I am late saying this, but WE WON!!!

(19,877 posts)Here in the city we have Con Edison, but LIPA & PSE&G need to get it together. Long Island's power seems to go out even in minor storms let alone big ones.

(14,337 posts)I am a Native and was at my daughter's during Sandy. LIPA need to be CONSTANTLY pruning those BIG TREES to keep them away from the wires and falling down on them in storms. I stood outside during Sandy and watched the winds whip those trees through the power lines. What is WRONG with you people? You cannot have this and not pay the consequences even with a MINOR storm. One small BRANCH, let alone an entire 30 foot tree, coming down on a wire will break the wires and take out power. Rocket science?

(4,359 posts)No more trees chopped down for poles...no more limbs breaking wires. Bury those things!

(14,337 posts)I now live in Florida (UGH), the land of the HURRICANE. All the wires are BURIED underground. Unfortunately, we also have CEMENT homes with no basements, but better to safe than sorry. You gotta do what you gotta do.

(44,974 posts)Did you get to vote?
Happily, my polling place was not affected. For the days leading up it Election Day, it was really adding to my stress level. I know NY was blue, but the blues areas were hard hit in NYC and in NJ and what if the popular vote was close? Anyway, happily it did not matter

(44,577 posts)It was nine days for me -- four in a freezing apartment, and when the temperature dropped, the rest in a "no-tell" motel near Newark Airport. My cell phone didn't start working until last Friday, through which I was able to read and text DU occasionally. On Election Day, I went home, voted and found the lights and heat on but no Internet or Wifi. So back to the motel, where my DU election night coverage consisted of my constantly refreshing the Latest Threads link on my cell phone and laughing at the sad faces on Fox!

(34,412 posts)1967 we had a blizzard to end all blizzards. We were out of school for 2 full weeks because the county was dealing with 30' snowdrifts blocking the roads. The plows kept getting stuck. They finally had to bring in equipment from Canada. We lost power for 4 days and it seemed like an eternity. Our house was heated by a wood burning furnace but the blower took electricity so it didn't do much good. My mom, dad, 2 cats & me lived in the basement, huddled around the furnace. I can't imagine how hard it's been for you. Glad things are looking up!
