Frank Luntz got paid by conservatives to test an anti-Obama film with lurid stories about his mother

by Joan Walsh

The official pollster of Fox News, Frank Luntz, is the man who renamed the estate tax the “death tax” and told Republicans to lie and call healthcare reform a “government takeover” of the medical system. It turns out he’s also the guy who tested anti-Obama films, including one that features nude photos of President Obama’s mother and depicts her as a prostitute, for a shadowy GOP donor. Now DVDs of the scurrilous film, “Dreams from My Real Father,” are finding their way into mailboxes in swing states.

Luntz won’t say who commissioned his anti-Obama focus group, and he reportedly counseled his client to go with a milder anti-Obama film by conservative Stephen K. Bannon. That’s showing up on cable television stations in swing states soon. Another film screened was Dinesh D’Souza’s fantasy “Obama: 2016,” which Luntz said didn’t test well with voters.

But the lurid anti-Obama film is showing up mailboxes in Ohio and Florida. It purports that Obama’s real father is the leftist Frank Marshall Davis, and it claims to have found photos of Ann Dunham in bondage magazines. It’s the creation of Joel Gilbert, reports Jeremy Peters in the New York Times, a conservative who has claimed he found Elvis Presley alive in a witness protection program and that Paul McCartney is actually dead. Gilbert wouldn’t disclose the donors behind his film and its distribution though he claimed he was sending out four million copies. He taunted Peters for being part of a mainstream media that hasn’t adequately vetted Obama, saying “I hope you’re not angry or jealous that I beat you to it and might win the Pulitzer Prize.”

Luntz claimed his client had doubts about the political wisdom of backing the Gilbert film, and that their approach to Luntz’s work was “I want to know if it’s as bad as I think it is.” Still, the idea that the Fox News consultant is part of testing the most lurid anti-Obama messages in a season full of them is kind of appalling. But it shouldn’t be surprising.

If the GOP doesn't think that some of this crap didn't warrant people voting just a little bit out of revenge then they are delusional.

Sticking it to creeps like this certainly crossed my mind when I voted.

Love of country and revenge are not mutually exclusive.

The monster Atwater, Luntz, Gingrich, Reed and Rove helped create in the 90s is now destroying all they had hoped to create. There was that dream of the "permanent rushpublican majority"...totally destroyed at the ballot box in the last 2 Presidential elections. They created the bubble that had led their corrupt and inept party off the political abyss and ready to head even further into political irrelevance.

I googled luntz to see what he had been saying about the race and the articles I found had him predicting Romney was going to win. He also got paid by American Crossroads to do polling for them. It appears he is was a part of that establishment that predicted a Romney win--the one he is now railing against.

You could almost feel sorry for them to be so duped and misguided. Almost. You'd think this whole event with Romney getting a spanking right in front of their eyes that they would turn on Fox and never trust them again. Instead, Fox will tell them sweet little lies and have them all back in the fold once again. They just don't have the skills to realize they have been duped and manipulated. That truly is sad, but more than that, it is frightening. These people VOTE and vote they did, based on the lies and half truths that Fox sold them.

I am not sure what the antidote to their propaganda is. Luntz and others like him have studied their audience and use psychological tricks and methods to lure them in and then keep them as good sheep. That is the scariest part of all. They have been inoculated against the truth. Just try telling them the truth and you'll see what you are up against. And it's not pretty. I fear for our country if they continue to use these tactics against such a large, willing bunch of followers.

28. I've been listening to right wing radio this week
Sat Nov 10, 2012, 05:42 PM
Nov 2012

I was visiting relatves in a rural area this week and so i spent a lot of time driving around and thought I'd listen to right wing radio to hear the reactions to the election drubbing of Romney.

From what i heard, the right wing radio hosts didn't learn anything and it sound as if they are going to continue on with the same messages that have made their audience an increasingly marginalized group. I didn't hear much reflection or introspection and instead heard plenty of the same anger and blame the Democrats for being traitors that have been the norm for decades. Some of the callers were demoralized and seeking reassurance and the responses they got from the various radio hosts was that Democrats were stupid and wanting to exploit the hard working Republicans and give to lazy minorities.

So, the good news for us is that the right wing (at least the radio component) will continue driving their listeners off the cliff.

FoxNews has lied to them day in and day out long before The Twit won the GOP nomination.

They don't watch that electronic fish wrap to become better informed. On the contrary, they watch it have their alternate reality validated. That's why they feel battered and bruised when the real world intrudes on their fantasies of white supremacy and trickle down economics that work (an married bachelors and round squares).
