In my youth, I was used to seeing political lies by the Right lasting days if not weeks, and their effect upon campaigns was lasting and pernicious even when it was publicized, in the limited manner in which it could be publicized in those days, and people would still be insisting that they were true years later. Witness some statements attributed to Al Gore, and although the Internet eXisted, it was not as widespread and attentively attuned to as it is now.
I always had the feeling that the President was going to win this, but I knew that he would when The Romney Lie of the Century was exposed and that exposure went viral, that is of course the lie about the Jeep plant. You couldn't access a website about used cars or lingerie without seeing a piece on that lie, and it quickly became a part of the National Consciousness. In the old days, if that lie were initially Told on a Monday, it would have appeared as gospel in every paper Tuesday morning and afternoon, mentioned in the Tuesday national news with only slight denials, been propagated on Wednesday at work, and maybe by Friday, the GM and Chrysler presidents may, Jesuit. May, have chimed in, but by then, most would suffer from. A persistence of memory with regard to this issue and would have moved on, and not accepted or processed the counterpoint and denial. Even a retraction would not have helped and of course today, the RW never retracts anything at all whatsoever.
So there are several entities which have changed the game for all time: the Internet presence alone, the 24 hour news channels, the iPad/iPhone instant access capability, and social media. These Morans were functioning on a level consistent with 1968 and Dick Nixon. They thought that they could just spew crap and it would be digested. What they apparently don't realize or don't care to realize is that The technology and access to same changed everything about the rules of the implementation of fascism. Gone are the days when the playbook is a tattered edition of Mein Kampf.
