If I we a RWer, I would lay the blame exactly where it belongs...

On the Intertubes...

In my youth, I was used to seeing political lies by the Right lasting days if not weeks, and their effect upon campaigns was lasting and pernicious even when it was publicized, in the limited manner in which it could be publicized in those days, and people would still be insisting that they were true years later. Witness some statements attributed to Al Gore, and although the Internet eXisted, it was not as widespread and attentively attuned to as it is now.

I always had the feeling that the President was going to win this, but I knew that he would when The Romney Lie of the Century was exposed and that exposure went viral, that is of course the lie about the Jeep plant. You couldn't access a website about used cars or lingerie without seeing a piece on that lie, and it quickly became a part of the National Consciousness. In the old days, if that lie were initially Told on a Monday, it would have appeared as gospel in every paper Tuesday morning and afternoon, mentioned in the Tuesday national news with only slight denials, been propagated on Wednesday at work, and maybe by Friday, the GM and Chrysler presidents may, Jesuit. May, have chimed in, but by then, most would suffer from. A persistence of memory with regard to this issue and would have moved on, and not accepted or processed the counterpoint and denial. Even a retraction would not have helped and of course today, the RW never retracts anything at all whatsoever.

So there are several entities which have changed the game for all time: the Internet presence alone, the 24 hour news channels, the iPad/iPhone instant access capability, and social media. These Morans were functioning on a level consistent with 1968 and Dick Nixon. They thought that they could just spew crap and it would be digested. What they apparently don't realize or don't care to realize is that The technology and access to same changed everything about the rules of the implementation of fascism. Gone are the days when the playbook is a tattered edition of Mein Kampf.

... without the internet, this country would be over.

The MSM has gone AWOL. The pundits and editorialists are more partisan than ever.

Several voter suppression efforts were defeated by social media too. No wonder Karl Rove was freaking out.

With you tube and video camera cell phones, you can not go and speak with a different agenda to different groups. That's how the infamous 47% tape came from. But there are countless moments where Mitt was caught saying stupid things and just making stuff up. And with tape to prove it, you can not deny it.

that the crazy loons use the internet too to create and proliferate their own bubble universe. However, the good news is that there's more of us than them. So GOTV is always an imperative. I am so proud of young people today, who have rejected the homophobe and racist world view. Their friends come in all colors and ethnicities, and they do not like all the hateful RW BS about food stamps, free stuff, etc. So let's keep working on expanding educational opportunities for kids. Get the electorate more and more informed with each generation.

When Kerry was 'swift-boated'; in the age of mobile devices that would have looked different.

You're sitting at a resteraunt waiting for your food and you read about; Benghazi, for example. In the time span that one would have normally been out to dinner, away from all media, you can point out how a right-wing 'friend' on Facebook is drinking the Kool-aid. You can google his post and find that it is a Fox News exclusive and point out that Fox News viewers still believe that WMDs were found in Iraq.

It is a much different world than the one they were successfully manipulating even a few years ago.

I'm struck by the reach of social media and humor to shape opinions. Jon Stewart on the Daily Show did several segments on the Jeep story. I wish I could find them on Youtube to post. We've had my 82 year old MIL staying with us since Hurricane Sandy hit and we've introduced her to the Daily Show. She's sharing what she sees with her friends and it's been HILARIOUS to overhear. Like this one:

Mom's Friend: Obama bails out the auto industry and they move jobs to China. Isn't that terrible?

Mom: It's not true, X.

Mom's Friend: I saw on Fox, Mitt Romney, blah, blah, blah.

Mom: It's not true. Turn off Fox news and watch The Daily Show. You'll laugh and you'll get the true story.

Mom's friend: Daily Show?

Mom: Yes, John Stewart. He's a nice Jewish boy.
