Am I thinking of Robin Hood?
Spoiler alert.
At the end of Robin Hood, is the the Sheriff of Nottingham about to take over the throne, believing Robin is dead, and then Robin shows up at the last moment and produces King Richard?
That's who Karl Rove reminded me of Tues. night. The Sheriff of Nottingham. Though it's a plot that's probably been repeated in a hundred movies. The villain believes the hero is dead and then cannot believe it when he shows up in the nick of time to stop the villain from prevailing.
General Tartan comes to mind as well.
