https://www.wdwinfo.com/news-stories/disneys-reedy-creek-improvement-district-is-being-renamed/The bill proposes a Board of Supervisors that will consist of five members appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate. It also states that no person who has worked with/for a theme park or entertainment complex within the past 3 years can serve on the board.
It clearly states, Reedy Creek Improvement District is not dissolved as of June 1 but will continue in full force under its new name.
The governor appoints all 5 board members.
The current board has 5 members: Donald R. Greer, Leila Jammal, Jane Adams, Laurence C. Hames Maximiano Brito, and they all have terms that expire in May 2025 except Brito (May 2023).
The bill also states, members may not serve more than 3 consecutive terms. Current board member Greer has been on board since 1975.
For a transitional period of no longer than two years from the effective date of this act, the district may continue doing business using Reedy Creek Improvement District as a fictitious name to provide sufficient time for the district to make the necessary change.

(11,744 posts)I hate things that the government and other citizens have done to Black Americans, Women, Brown people, LGBTQ people, and other marginalized groups. I see the flaws in our history.
This, however, is my home. I want to address and fix those things that America continues to get wrong because I actually believe what the preamble of the Constitution says, that We the People are trying to form a "more perfect Union"
Anyone who thinks that the United States is "fine the way it is" is either a wealthy white man, or deluded.
People like DeSantis and Posobiec make their money and maintain power by keeping things the way they are, so of course they will fight and lie, and do everything else Conservatives have to do to keep things the way they are. Of course they are scared and threatened by the facts of history.

(5,234 posts)Millions of $$ in bonds outstanding . They regularly come to the bond market to finance improvements. Now these bonds will be worth much less because of political interfering. pension funds usually buy them for investment. Nice going Ronnie.

(5,532 posts)One of the stupidest elements is that deSantis owes his political life to Disney.
Florida is trending deep red because of the retirees and tax refugees from the rest of the Country.
Florida doesn't have a state income tax because we bleed the tourists dry with sales tax.
Aside from the beaches, Disney is almost entirely responsible for the entire tourist industry in Central Florida. They were the 800 pound gorilla anchor tenant that allows the remainder of the players to fill out the rest of the mall.
So the lack of state income tax draws older retirees who skew red and elect assholes.
I know many of you will say that Disney should just leave Florida. Never going to happen. Even if there was another location where the weather worked year around, they just have too much infrastructure invested. I could not even begin to guess but it would have to be over a hundred billion to replace what they have here. If I had to guess, I would say closer to 500 billion. Anyone who thinks they can just move isn't aware of the size and scope of their operation.

(3,418 posts)You are right. It was a rural backwater. The only industry to speak of was growing & processing orange juice. Job opportunities were scarce. Small town America. Not necessarily bad but again job opportunities limited, etc.
Disney remade the whole area.

(21,620 posts)The government basically told Disney "hey, as long as you obey building codes and what not, you can pretty much run your property like your own town." So now that Desantis wants to get rid of it, which has everything to do with wanting to make a name for himself, and nothing to do with actually making anything better for Florida, why should the governor get to appoint his own board to run it? Shouldn't the property be incorporated as a city/town, where people can vote for their own council/mayor???
