(63,926 posts)I remember that moment in time: It was election day in 1964. I had just come from my polling place and it was a beautiful day. I was certain Sen. Kerry would win. I went online and somehow found DU. We had some good wine and had it with dinner. My high hopes didn't last but afterwards I felt a strong need to find a place where I could share my grief.
But I had found Democratic Underground.
Oh, thank God for that! At least we had shared our grief and that was a very wonderful thing. Over the years I wrote about art and published my essays here on DU. Later they were in book form.
What a great memory!

(14,125 posts)when John Kerry lost. I hated Bush so much and was convinced that our country was finished. Little did I know the worst was yet to come.

(63,926 posts)At the time we were arguing about Kerry, whether he told the truth about his time fighting in the Vietnam War. It seems so silly now, but at least Bush wasn't Trump. I think there were a lot of Republicans who decamped from the party when they just couldn't stomach Trump. Now, you have to be an out and out lunatic to that kind of Republican, or even to admit to being a republican in the first place!

(91,002 posts)But I was trying to finish grad school and write my dissertation. I really ached to become politically active, but I had to tell myself sternly that Dubya & Cabal would neither know nor care if I finished my quest but I would know for the rest of my life.
So I finished up in February 2002, started marching in protests in my town, hugged old friends, made new friends and was invited to join the Vets for Peace despite being a lifelong civilian, discovered DU, and in general kept very, very busy.
DU was a really important part of my activism in those days we shared information, shared intelligent and accurate sources, taught each other so much.

(15,007 posts)I actually first found you back in your first year!
I don't remember what I put in on the search engine at the then 24/7 Net Cafe in Times Sq... but you popped up. I guess it had to do with W being elected.
I was at a Net Cafe bc I didn't have a computer at home.
I had been using the Library computers for going on line. At that time I think you could stay on it no one reserved a time slot after you... but at some point that changed. So I sometimes would go to two libraries in a day.
The cafe didn't charge that much per hr, and I think if you paid x extra you could get a longer pass - cheaper over several hours which I'd do.
Because I had so many things I was looking up, starting to set up my first e-mail, then 9-11 happened I forgot about seeing you.
I was liviing in Brooklyn then. A day and a half later I went to the closest net cafe but they weren't working bc the cable lines that supplied Bklyn w Internet services were cut from 9-11. Finally was able to get into Manhattan and the Net Cafe.
I arrived here in early June "20 bc I needed more interactions with Dems bc the off topic political forum on another site had too little people on it especially w drumphf running. Plus no one was marking RFK's assassination, and that annoyed me.
So I - I remembered your site name after practically 20 years! And to my delighted shock, and surprise you were (are) still there (here)!
It's great to connect around the country, and internationally! Here's to many, many more years.
🍷🥳 👍
