Democrats gain two net seats in the Senate against all odds.

There were 23 Democratic Senate seats up for election this year and only 10 Republican seats. Furthermore, of the ten retirements, seven were Democrats (counting Joe Lieberman as a Democrat). All in all, this meant the Democrats had to fight very hard to hang onto the Senate, which they now control 53-47.

And yet, against these odds, Democrats managed to pick up two Senate seats for a new majority of 55 to 45.
