A Theory Behind the GOP Losses

Andrew Cohen: "May I suggest instead a simple, elegant overriding theory on why we won't have a Romney Administration in 2013? No serious political party in America -- no legitimate party in any viable democracy -- can win an election by suppressing votes. So long as the Republican Party endorses (and enacts) voting laws designed to make it harder for registered voters to vote, so long as Republican officials like Ohio's Jon Husted contort themselves to interpret those laws in a restrictive fashion, the Republicans will continue to play a loser's game."

"That's my theory, anyway, and I'm sticking to it. Having covered for the past two years the voting rights front in this epic election cycle, I have come to believe that the Republicans will begin to win presidential elections again only when they start competing for votes with the substance of their ideas."

I don't think anything turns off rational voters more than people working as hard as they can to deny people the right to vote

and then look shocked when your ass gets handed to you on a platter.

Not only did they try to suppress the vote, they showed their hand too early and let them know that they were going to try to keep people from voting. That gave people enough time to plan on spending all day or night in line voting.

The big reason is that they thought they could buy the elections by pouring in overwhelming amounts of money into them for ads. It was the ground game that won it for Obama and many Dems who worked with him. In Ohio, Romney pumped something like five times the money on ads, but he only had 20-30 offices in the state. The Obama campaign had 103, as I understand it. Ads don't win elections. Getting out the vote does. The Dems did that better, and the suppression attempts and the ad blitzes only helped them in their GOTV efforts.

The republicans are so terrible that they pissed off otherwise apathetic Americans just enough so that they got off their fat asses long enough to go vote.

I base this on the fact that the apathetic Americans I know, when informed of the fact that the republicans want them to be slaves, actually say that if they weren't apathetic slobs they'd vote a democratic ticket every time.

Republicans were great motivators.

5. Dumbing Down The Electorate...

Mike Malloy has hit on this topic for nearly 20 years...the rushpublican game was always to create a smaller and smaller electorate. It was to make politics so toxic that a majority of people would tune out...rather watch sports or American Idol than deal with politics. The less who were interested and involved the easier it was to win elections. They started on the school boards and county commissions...taking advantage of electoral apathy along with creating their own "media" to ramp up hate and anger...and to blame Democrats for the apathy they created. Yesterday the electorate they hoped to numb and alienate showed up and said "enough"! Problem is the rushpublicans have already thrown Willard under the bus and screaming how they weren't "conservative" enough. Guess we'll have to make sure to kick their asses again in '14...
